Blog Kiosk: 9/26/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

100 wins never felt so good.

Last night the Dodgers, for the first time since 1974, won their 100th contest of the season -- reaching the mark for the seventh time in franchise history. Furthermore, for just the fourth time in their history they have recorded more than 300 doubles as a team, and are just seven double short of tying a club record. Per AJ Cassavell and Josh Thornton at MLB.com:
"It's quite an accomplishment," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said about 100 wins. "The guys have done some great things, the coaching, the training staff. It's been a great team effort and it's taken a lot of players to get to this point. We haven't accomplished our ultimate goal, but to step back and say we won 100 baseball games is quite a feat."
Better yet, the victory over the Padres saw Yu Darvish's best outing in Blue. He went seven innings, struck out nine San Diego batters, walked none, allowed just two hits and one earned run. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“I think I’m in a really good position, physically and mentally,” Darvish said Monday through a translator.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1975 Burt Hooton set a Dodgers record for starters when he won his 12th consecutive game. In 1981 the Dodgers were no-hit by legendary fireballer Nolan Ryan of the Astros in Houston, 5-0. It would be the fifth no-no of his career. You can watch the last out of the game here.

Justin Turner was named the winner of the Dodgers' 12th annual Roy Campanella Award, which is given to the Dodger player who best exemplifies the spirit and leadership of the late Hall of Fame catcher. Past winners are Russell Martin (2007), James Loney (2008), Juan Pierre (2009), Jamey Carroll (2010), Matt Kemp (2011), A.J. Ellis (2012), Clayton Kershaw (2013-14), Zack Greinke (2015) and Chase Utley (2016).
Dave Roberts: “J.T. is the epitome of what we’re trying to do going forward, the type of baseball player he is, what he stands for. Those are the guys you win with.”
“To be frank, there was a situation where he had to be on the field, and he was late,” Roberts said. “Where we’re at right now, it has to be very clear to everyone in the clubhouse that the only purpose is to prepare for the postseason, to finish this season strong, and to be about goals.
“No one player can be bigger than the team. The priority has got to be for all of us. For me, that was a decision he made. Not me.”
“It’s special, man, to be from San Francisco and get the opportunity to play against the team I grew up watching,” Dickson said. “To be able to get the first one off Bumgarner, it’s not easy. Everybody knows that. I was fortunate enough to find something on the middle of the plate.
“What’s unique about Mark (Washington) is that his best days are still ahead of him,” Lehigh coach Sean Leary said. “When I talked with scouts, they would talk to me not about drafting him to fill an organizational need, but when they talked about Mark (Washington), it was more, ‘I’m really excited to see where he’s going to be when he’s 24.’”

One thing Larry notes is that a 1948 Leaf Robinson rookie card in PSA 6 condition sold for more than a card in PSA 7 condition, and both cards were from the same seller. What this tells me is that collectors are doing what they should do -- BUY THE CARD, NOT THE HOLDER. It is not unusual for over-grading to occur.
