Blog Kiosk: 10/12/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

The dreams of youth.

Above is a fantastic 1943 ACME press photo of several New York area youngsters at Ebbets Field on a midsummer day trying out for the club (ebay link). As many teams are wont to do, the Dodgers reached out to the community in hopes of finding a diamond in the rough. At left is Hall of Famer George Sisler showing the kids the ins-an-outs of fielding. Per the descriptor on the reverse:
"IMAGINE -- THEY WANT TO BE DODGERS.  New York City -- Kids who would rather be bums than scholars, are told how to stop a hot grounder by George Sisler, one-time famous first baseman.  Some of metropolitan aspirants for diamond fame are (left to right, next to Sisler): Alfred Phillips, Coney Island; Bert Oppenheim, Coney Island; Bob Geary, Flatbush; Ernest Dolphy, Astoria; and Paul Brenner, Manhattan.  They are trying out at Ebbets Field, and a careful check on their performances will be used at a later date when the farms call for possible big league timber."

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1916 the Brooklyn Robins lost Game 5 against the Boston Red Sox to lose the World Series. As a side note, Boston played their games at the home of their NL rival, Boston Braves, since their stadium held more patrons than Fenway Park. In 1920 the Cleveland Indians defeated the Brooklyn Robins to win the World SeriesIn 1949 Vin Scully, after being recruited by Red Barber, worked his very first broadcast of his career when he does play-by-play for a college football game between Maryland and Boston University. He famously called the game from atop the roof during a very frigid day at Fenway Park. In 1988 Orel Hershiser threw a five-hit shutout victory, 6-0, against the NY Mets in Game 7 of the NLCS to advance to the World Series.

  • Via Bill Plunkett at the OC Register; "Dodgers rediscover their grind-it-out mojo in NLDS sweep."
“We did win 12 of our last 18. I think that helped,” Dodgers GM Farhan Zaidi said when asked how the “team offense” had been turned back on for the NLDS. “I think being in that environment in Colorado where they were looking to clinch (on the final weekend of the regular season) and playing some games with some fairly high stakes. That helped also.
“And really, the days we had off the workouts we had I thought really re-focused us. The coaching staff, the front office, the players were talking about how to prepare for this series. It was good for us to be able to press the reset button. Guys came out ready to play. It’s easy for those layoffs to become an excuse where guys feel like they’re rusty. But our guys were obviously ready from the first pitch.
  • Here's some LA Kings news. Per Jon Rosen at LA Kings Insider; "Miller honored at City Hall; Statue to be unveiled on Bob Miller Appreciation Night."
“Bob Miller will forever be the Voice of the LA Kings and we look forward to honoring Bob and his family as part of this very special evening in January,” Robitaille said in a statement. “It is a tremendous honor and one Bob certainly deserves.”
  • Per Jayson Stark at The Wall Street Journal; "You Can’t Win Them All: A blockbuster Dodgers-Red Sox trade took shape in hours, after Colletti got a phone call: ‘Hey, would you have any interest in Manny?’ Jayson Stark reviews ‘The Big Chair’ by Ned Colletti."
  • With the front office dream team the Dodgers have built it should be no surprise that other clubs are looking to gobble up some of our best and brightest for their own front offices. Mark Timmons at LA Dodgers Talk tells us a bit about the recent departure of Jeremy Zoll -- our Assistant Director of Player Development.
  • Per Laurence Reisman at TC Palm; "O'Malley in talks with Major League Baseball to take over Historic Dodgertown."
O'Malley said Tuesday it's time to take the business to another level and to ensure Historic Dodgertown remains a significant community asset when he's gone.
"Dodgertown is worth saving and enhancing, and we're getting ready for the next chapter of that," he said. "I'm very proud of what we do here, but I want to see it taken to the next level."
  • Here's the guy you either hate or love. Famed ballhawk Zach Hample is at Dodger Stadium in his newest video. He wrote, ""Moneyball Steve" from Dodgerfilms SCHOOLED ME during batting practice in the left field pavilion. Of course it helps that he's about nine feet tall, but seriously, the dude is incredibly talented at climbing over the benches and making plays."
