Blog Kiosk: 1/14/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

Check out this fantastic 1947 pic taken by Cuban photographer Sanchez Y. Cabredo of Jackie Robinson wearing a Montreal Royals uniform during a spring match in Havana against the Dodgers. He is seen scoring after hitting a home run off of a Brooklyn Dodger pitcher (soon-to-be teammate). This photo is currently available at RMY Auctions.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1994 the Dodgers signed Korean starting pitcher Chan Ho Park out of Hanyang University in Seoul. He would pitch nine season in Los Angeles -- going 84-58 with an 3.77 ERA, 4.23 FIP and an ERA+ of 108. In 2006 the Dodgers, with closer Eric Gagne on the DL due to Tommy John surgery, traded starting pitcher Edwin Jackson and minor league pitcher Chuck Tiffany to Tampa Bay for relievers Danys Baez and Lance CarterEdwin Jackson, who won his first Major League game by out-dueling Randy Johnson of the DBacks, would go on to play for 14 different ballclubs -- and he is expected to play for another team in 2020. In 2006 the Dodgers also signed free agent starting pitcher Aaron Sele to a one-year contract. He would go 8-6 with a 4.53 ERA, 4.36 FIP and an ERA+ of 100.

  • Audio: Ned Colletti joins Roggin and Rodney to discuss the Houston Astros scandal and the punishment that came down yesterday. (Audio Link)
  • ICYMI: The Dodgers reportedly signed Alex Wood to a one-year $4 million contract. As I'm sure you realize, this is a depth play. Wood comes in as a potential fifth starter, while also being a temporary placeholder for some the kids we have vying for a permanent spot on the rotation.

  • Some believe the Astros punishment was harsh - others think it wasn't harsh enough. I believe the latter. You can read MLB's entire report here.
  • Below is the Dodgers official announcement regarding this whole mess:
“All clubs have been asked by Major League Baseball not to comment on today’s punishment of the Houston Astros as it’s inappropriate to comment on discipline imposed on another club. The Dodgers have also been asked not to comment on any wrongdoing during the 2017 World Series and will have no further comment at this time.”
  • Is a lifetime ban coming? Via Ian Browne at MLB.com -- "Cora named in MLB report, may face discipline."
“Cora was involved in developing both the banging scheme and utilizing the replay review room to decode and transmit signs,” wrote Manfred. “Cora participated in both schemes, and through his active participation, implicitly condoned the players’ conduct. I will withhold determining the appropriate level of discipline for Cora until after the [Department of Investigations] completes its investigation of the allegations that the Red Sox engaged in impermissible electronic sign stealing in 2018 while Cora was the manager.”

  • Following Darvish's comments is the following from his wife, on twitter:

  • Per Alden Gonzalez at ESPN -- "Cody Bellinger on Astros, Red Sox allegations: Dodgers did it 'the right way'"
"Honestly, we're curious to see what happens," Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger said Sunday. "It sucks, man. We were close, but we did it the right way."
...
The Dodgers lost to the Astros in seven games, then to the Red Sox in five. Asked if the use of technology to steal signs extends beyond the Red Sox and Astros, Bellinger said: "I think it's gotta come to an end unless it's gonna be a disaster. I think we have to do something about it."
  • No one drafts better than the Dodgers. Per Jonathan Mayo at MLB.com -- "Who has baseball's best farm? We asked execs."
  • Yeah, that was a weird night. Some Dodger and Rams players showed up at a Kings game last week, and inexplicably the evening turned into 'chug a beer night'. Not only did Todd Gurley and Gavin Lux down some beers, but so did just about everyone featured on the jumbotron. It was something to behold.
