eBay: A Kiss and Some Awards

There really is nothing better than vintage press photos. Here are a couple on eBay I thought worthy of highlighting.

Here is pitcher, Sal Maglie getting a wet one from Roy Campanella. This is written on the reverse.
"MAGLIE NO-HITS PHILS, 5-0, Brooklyn, N.Y.: Brooklyn Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella plants a big kiss on the cheek of pitcher Sal Maglie in the dressing room here Sept. 25, 1956 after the 39-year-old Giant cast-off hurled a no-hit, no-run game against the Phils to move the Brooks to within a half game of the league-leading Milwaukee Braves. The 5-0 win was the first no-hitter in Sal's long career, and he is the oldest hurler since Cy Young to pitch a hitless game."

After the flurry of recent Dodger awards this photo seems very appropriate.
"DODGERS' AWARD WINNERS-----Brooklyn, N.Y........ Brooklyn Dodger pitchers Don Drysdale, (left) and Don Newcombe display awards they received before today's opener at Ebbets Field. Drysdale received the "Harold C. Burr Award" as the outstanding Dodger rookie of 1956. Newcombe received the "Cy Young Award", as baseball's best pitcher last season and the "Most Valuable Player Award" of the National League."

An Brief Artist Interview: Tommervik

I was recently checking out eBay and ran across a series of original paintings that caught my eye. Now, I'm not an art aficionado, by any means, but I do take note of things I like. I was struck by the abstract view of these Dodgers ballplayers in action.

They were painted by Tommervik who has been very prolific. There are 145 paintings listed on eBay, and the range of subject matters not only includes sports but also pop culture. The opening asking prices are exorbitant, but I believe the artist is looking for offers to consider. I did a little bit of research and found that this artist has been written about before, most notably on various Star Wars websites. Check out an interview on TorWars here. I figured I should give it a try and communicate with the artist myself, as well.

Thanks for taking the time to write back to me. Do you have any artistic influences?

My artistic influence is painting, I like all different types of genres. I like art history.
How long have you been painting? Did you study art? If so, where?

Here is Clayton Kershaw after the Cy Young Award announcement. (Pic via Twitter: Lockerz: Dodgers)
  • Well, Steve Dilbeck of the LA Times tells us that John Maffei of the North County Times in San Diego County voted for Ian Kennedy in the NL Cy Young. What an idiot!
  • Cliff Corcoran at SI writes, 'Kershaw's NL Cy Young Victory Comes with Concerns for Dodgers.'
Not only did none of the five pitchers ahead of Kershaw on that list (pitchers who won the Cy Young at Kershaw's age or younger) go on to have a Hall of Fame career, all five were effectively washed up by the age of 32, if not long before.

  • McCourt is staying in LA? Via Mike DiGiovanna at LA Times.
"I love Los Angeles and plan to stay in L.A.," McCourt said after Thursday's MLB owners meetings. "I don't know what my plans are, quite frankly, because I haven't had time to think about that."
  • This was unexpected news. The Houston Astros are moving to the AL West Division, and 2 more wild card teams will be added to the playoffs, via Rick Gano at AP/Yahoo.
  • This was welcome news. (Twitter Link: @Ken_Rosenthal) (Twitter Link: @Ken_Rosenthal)
