This time it's Puig.

Last night the Dodgers recorded their eighth walk-off win when trailing into the last frame of the game, and this time Yasiel Puig was the one who put in the final nail. With two on he hit a blistering liner that went to the left-centerfield wall. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:

“You never want to use superlatives with players, but I think that Yasiel cares as much as anyone, or more than anyone, as far as wanting to be the guy and his care and his try,” said manager Dave Roberts.

On another note, Yu Darvish exited the game after the sixth inning due to some advice from our ace. Per ESPN:

"Between innings, I talked to Kershaw, and he asked me, 'How do you feel?' '' Darvish said through an interpreter. "I told him, 'I feel something in my back,' and he said, 'We need you really bad in six weeks.'

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1982 the Dodgers and Cubs played a 17 inning game that was temporarily halted at a tie, 1-1, because of darkness (this was before Wrigley Field had lights). The next day they begin where they left off. The Dodgers would eventually win on a sacrifice fly by Dusty Baker in the 21st inning. In 1992 Dodgers hurler Kevin Gross no-hit the Giants at Dodger Stadium, 2-0. Watch the last out of the game, as called by Vin Scully, here. Per a NY Times article:

"The later it got, the more the adrenaline started pumping," Gross said. "It was just a blur when that last out was made."

Blog Kiosk: 8/16/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Last night, the Blue Crew held off the White Sox until the inevitable rally began. Per Cary Osborne at Dodger Insider:

“Kind of a weird night,” Wood said. “I didn’t feel like I had my best stuff. We made some (good) pitches. It’s a kind of an interesting dynamic became they’re one of the most aggressive teams in all of baseball, so it was a lot more of my secondary stuff, and I feel like we were able to command that for the most part and made some pitches and they put the ball on the ground and in the air. … I just had to hold us in there till we got that offensive explosion.”

Soon, a bases loaded hit-by-pitch drives in the go-ahead run and opened a floodgate that eventually lead to four more runs crossing the plate.

Oh... And we're 50 games over .500... Let that sink in for a bit...

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1950 Giants third baseman Hank Thompson hit two inside-the-park home runs off Dodger pitchers Don Bankhead and Carl Erskine at the Polo Grounds. Brooklyn got pummelled 16-7. In 1964 Cardinals great Curt Flood recorded eight consecutive hits against the Dodgers during a doubleheader in Los Angeles; including four hit against Sandy Koufax. Unfortunately, Koufax injured his elbow while on the basepaths and would not pitch again this season. In 1988 the Dodgers traded fan favorite Pedro Guerrero to the Cardinals for starting pitcher John Tudor. This move would prove to be an impactful one. I nine starts Tudor would solidify the rotation by going 4-3 with an 2.41 ERA and 3.36 FIP.

More Dodgers Memorabilia at Heritage Auctions

A couple weeks ago I highlighted an original Norman Rockwell drawing featuring the Dodgers that is currently on auction at Heritage. With just days before the end of that sale I thought I would point to a some more Dodger memorabilia that I thought were cool.

For instance, check out the above twenty-one-pound slab of Italian white marble above. (auction link) As you likely guessed, it once resided in the Brooklyn Dodgers former home, Ebbets Field, and it's story about how it still exist is fascinating. Per the auction description:

Before a wrecking ball--painted at the whim of a dark humorist with the white hide and red stitching of a baseball--swung the more dramatic blows in wiping the Dodgers off Brooklyn's map, any contents of monetary value were salvaged. Seats were unbolted and hawked for five dollars each. Discarded bats and photos were sold at auction. And, as the exterior walls of the grandstands fell, the valuable white marble of the rotunda was carted off and repurposed in the Tri-State area's inexhaustible rush of progress.

Blog Kiosk: 8/15/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

The other day we were introduced, via a tweet from the Del Mar Racetrack, to a thoroughbred racehorse named "Puig." The four-legged speedster hit the track for the first time on Sunday in an maiden race (a race for horses who have not yet won a race) at a bit over 32-1 odds, and came in at a very respectable second place. • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1926 a daffy play happened to the daffiest of Brooklyn ballplayers. Outfielder Babe Herman, in the seventh inning and the bases loaded, hit a double off the right field wall and attempted to stretch it to a triple. Unbeknownst to him, two runners ahead of him failed to advance beyond third base. So, he cruised into third while two other Dodgers were standing there. Per the rules, the lead runner is entitled to the base, so Herman and the man who was on first (Chick Fewster) were called out. So, Herman doubled into a double play.

It features an quarter pound of all-beef dog topped with Sport Peppers, Neon Green Relish, Diced Onions, Spicy mustard, Pickle Spear and Tomato Slices on a Poppy Seed Bun. See it on the right.
