13 Straight Road Wins Sets New Dodgers Fanchise Record - Puig Injures Hand


The Dodgers just keep rolling.

With Chris Capuano on the mound, the Dodgers held off the Cubs for a 3-0 victory.  It was an impressive win that saw clutch pitching and great defense. 

Capuano went a scoreless 6 1/3 innings, while the relief staff ably handled the Cubs.  Brandon League came in to help Capuano out of a jam the 7th inning, and continued to show that he is back.  He got a inning ending double play in a high pressure situation.  The Dodgers defense recorded 4 double plays, and at least one highlight reel diving catch. 

Yasiel Puig, once again a huge factor on the field, caught a falling line drive off the bat of Starlin Castro in the 7th inning.  (Watch it here)  As you can see, he jammed his glove hand into the turf and would eventually leave the game early with a left thumb contusion.  Of specials note, Puig also almost made spectacular catch in the 3rd inning.  With Samardzija at the plate, Puig came in contact with the right field wall to almost catch a foul ball.  As replays show (see it here), Puig first deflected the ball of the wall, but caught it as it came down.  At first the umpires ruled it a catch, but after a discussion they ruled it foul.

This victory marks the 13th straight road victory for the Dodgers, and establishes a new franchsie record - eclipsing a mark originally set in 1924.

Following up on the Puig injury to his glove hand, he is now listed as day-to-day.  Currently, Puig is wearing a brace.  This is evidenced by several pics that have shown up on twitter.

On Saturday night, Puig was scheduled as a special guest for Panini America's VIP reception dinner during the National Sports Collectors Convention that is being held in Chicago.  He, along with other stars like Pedro Martinez, Johnny Damon, and Chris Chelios (hockey), would be meeting with Panini's best customers for a private "meet, greet & signing".

The conversion from baseball diamond to soccer field required 12,500 square feet of new sod and Bermuda grass, which took Hansen and his crew of nine two days to place, smooth and outline. The temporary field, which is about 210 feet wide, runs parallel to the right-field line starting just outside the third base coaching box and extending 315 feet to the warning track in right field.

Legendary Auctions At the National - Some Baseball Historic Items

The National Sports Collectors Convention isn't just about autographs and Baseball cards.  There are also a couple of auctions taking place.  Last night, Heritage held their auction that featured Eddie Gaedel's Baseball bat and the Sam Snead collection.  See Beckett's story here.  Tonight, Legendary Auctions is holding their event.  Earlier this week I featured the Jackie Robinson Day commemorative watch that was given to Jackie during his rookie season that's for sale.  Today, I focus on 3 historic Baseball items that I thought were too cool not to share. See them below.

Here is a Harry Wright Hall of Fame Induction plaque.  He is known as the "Father of Professional Baseball".  This plaque was made by the same company that the HOF uses and is believed to have been made for the HOF, but was decommissioned due to an error in the engraving.  Notice the misspelling of the word "undfeated" on the second line.

Below is a final out game used Baseball from Game 7 of the 1903 World Series signed and notated by winning pitcher Cy Young.  Via the auction description:
Game 7 pitted Boston's ace, Cy Young, against the Pittsburg iron man, Deacon Phillippe. Young prevailed to be named the contest's winner, and the upstart Red Sox took a four-games-to-three lead in the scheduled best-of-nine series. The well-used ball is annotated in Young's hand, "Game 7 last out ball, 1903 Boston BBC Worlds Champions, Young vs Phillippe." On the adjacent sweet spot is the signature of Cy Young, himself. As was typical for the time, the ball was probably used for most or all of the game ... and it shows the scars. The previously unbeaten Phillippe was greeted by back-to-back triples in the first inning by Jimmy Collins and Chick Stahl. Others who undoubtedly touched or hit this ball were Pirates Honus Wagner, Ginger Beaumont and Fred Clarke as well as Boston's Freddie Parent and Candy LaChance. A similar ball with similar notations from Game 1 of the 1903 Series (also pitched by Young and Phillippe) resides in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Below is an imperial cabinet card of the 1887 Detroit Wolverines that features Ned Hanlon, Dan Brouthers, Deacon White and Sam Thompson.  This season they won the NL Championship, and then proceeded to defeat the American Association’s St. Louis Browns in a very early version of the World Series.

National Envy has Set In - Here are More Pics and Links Found Online

It looks like Day 2 of the National Sports Collectors Convention was better than the first.  Below are some links about the National.

That is one tiny Major League bat, above!  BTW, the Gaedel bat sold for a little over $44k.  I'm amazed it's taken this long for Spahn's collection to his the auction circuit.

I want this card badly.  You just can't beat a Jackie and Satchel autographed card.

Check out Magic's Bobblehead


Is it me, or is Magic palming a BASEketball?

I can see it now. 

Magic stands near the free throw line ready to defend against Doug "Sir Swish" Remer.  He lays down his best "psyche out" which causes an errant shot to deflect off the rim.  He immediately jumps toward the loose ball and slams it home to end the inning.
