A Jackie Robinson Game Bat Found by a Good Samaritan at a Garage Sale

Here's a video from KCCI of a great story.  A frequent garage sale buyer in Des Moines, Iowa came across an unusual bat that was for sale for $1.00.  It contained some telling signs to the shopper that pointed to it potentially being used by a Dodger Hall of Famer, Jackie Robinson.  Then, this bargain shopper did something I dare say a lot of people wouldn't do.  He went to the owner and made mention of what he thought she had, and after a brief talk found out that the owners uncle was former Dodger and a sometime roommate of Jackie's, Joe Hatten.

Obviously, once finding out what she may have, she decided they wanted to keep the bat as a family heirloom.

I'm sure there are many of you who are wondering "what kind of dope doesn't buy it and keep it for themselves?"  But, I prefer to praise the gentleman for being a honest man who would prefer to be good to a neighbor.

On a side note, I'm not very familiar with game-used material, especially of a legend like Robinson, but considering her family background it's a pretty good indication that this could be the real thing.  Now, watch the video below and enjoy.

A Big Hat Tip to Gray Ghost on the Net54 message board for pointing this out.

Weekend Autograph Opportunities: Manny Mota and the Long Beach Expo

Here are this weekends autograph opportunities and events throughout the Southland. As always, be sure to check the Blue Heaven Calendar for other events (a link can always be found on the tab at the top of this page, just left of center), and always confirm with the establishment. Everything is subject to change.  Please email me with any tips about upcoming events in Southern California.  As the rest of the week progresses I'll update this post with other events (if there are any) as I become aware of them.  Also, I don't always list every event below, so be sure to check my Calendar.  I always try to favor free signing events over paying events.  Click on any pic to embiggen.

Dodgers Prospect Corey Seager on the Tweet Seat

With the first day of the Baseball players draft starting today, the Dodgers decided to have their 2012 1st Round pick, Corey Seager take a seat on the "Tweet Seat".

Check out what he had to say below.

How's this for some brotherly advice?

Corey is a smart man.  He knows how to get on the good side of management.

Blog Kiosk: 6/6/2013 - Dodgers' Links - Dodgers Sign Young Player, the Dodgers Arborist & an Interview with Mike Brito

This is the best news I've heard all year.  The Dodgers made a surprise signing yesterday.  They signed a young hurler by the name of Michael Douglas to a one-day contract as a part of the Make A Wish Foundation. Pic above via the Dodgers tumblr.

Always the pioneering organization, perhaps it's no surprise that the Dodgers, who famously gave the world Jackie Robinson, and who currently employ baseball's first female head athletic trainer in Sue Falsone, should be the one and only Major League Baseball club to employ a full-time arborist. Or even a part-time arborist. Perea, who's been with the team since 2009, is closing in on his Bachelor of Science degree in Turf Science from Penn State University Online, has Associate of Science degrees in Pest Management and Ornamental Horticulture from Mt. San Antonio College, and manages a full-time staff or four.
  • Congratulations, Paul LoDuca.  He is working his way towards a career in a Baseball broadcast booth.  He'll be broadcasting more collegiate World Series Baseball.

  • I hate having to link to any McCourt related news, but this is interesting since we'll likely get a look at the financial arrangement between the Guggenheim Group and McCourt.  Via Bill Shaikin at the LA Times, "Judge orders Dodgers to release details of deal with Frank McCourt".
  • Ron Cervenka at Think Blue LA interviews the man who discovered Puig, Mike Brito.
  • "Scott Elbert injury: Dodgers LHP needs Tommy John surgery," via Eric Stephen at True Blue LA.
  • Panini just released some preview pics of their upcoming 2013 Golden Age Baseball set.  Check out the autographed cards of former Dodgers Ron cey and Tommy Davis below.  This set comes out on June 26th.  Check out more pics here; including autographed cards from cast members of Happy Days and the Brady Bunch.
  • Bob Lemke recounts an old story featuring Satchel Paige that may have some relation to Bill Veeck's gimmick of sending up Eddie Gaedel to bat.
  • The Baseball Draft starts today.  Ken Gurnick at MLB.com has a nice report on the Dodgers plans.
"We definitely dipped into that," said White. "I feel better about our current depth than one might suspect, but I always try to get pitching and that's not going to change. We'll still try to get the highest-ceiling guy."
  • Orel at Sons of Steve Garvey provides a transcript of Vin Scully telling us who Al Campanis thought was the best player he ever saw.  Although I'm way too young to have ever seen this player, based on stories I've read and analysis from folks I trust, I can't disagree with Campanis.  There's a reason they called him, "El Maestro".

Yasiel Puig Will be the Topps 2013 Bowman Lucky Redemption #4, and They are Already Selling for Huge Dollars

Not only is Yasiel Puig making a splash throughout the Baseball world, he is causing a tidal wave in the collecting world.  Topps announced a couple of days ago that Puig will be their 2013 Bowman Lucky Redemption #4, and as a result of his phenomeal debut this card is selling for big bucks.  Like, REALLY BIG BUCKS.
(twitter link)

As you may know, Topps released a group of 5 different redemption cards that can be turned in for a bonus autographed card of a hot rookie.  So far, (including Puig) 4 players have been announced.  They are:
  • #1 Hyun-Jin Ryu - L.A. Dodgers
  • #2 Jurickson Profar - Rangers
  • #3 Kevin Gausman - Orioles
  • #4 Yasiel Puig - Dodgers
Check out what the Ryu card looks like from my previous post from early May here.  Unfortunately, an early peek of the Puig card is not available, but according to their tweet it will use a "Blue Sapphire" design.

As of this posting, since the Topps announcement 3 days ago only two cards have closed on eBay at a "Buy It Now" price that can be deciphered.  They sold for $405.00 and an astounding $700.00.  Five other cards also closed at "Buy It Now" values after the announcement, but were sold using the best offer option.  So, we don't know those exact values.  We can determine, though that the range is likely somewhere between $399.99 to $799.99.

As for currently live auctions, there are 5 auctions running between $360.00 to $563.00.

That's a lot of change, wouldn't you say?

Below is an example of what the redemption card for the Yasiel Puig card looks like.
