Blog Kiosk: 6/4/2016 - Dodgers Links - Seager! Seager! Seager!

What a night.  Corey Seager was a one man wrecking machine.  He blasted three home runs to lead the Dodgers to a 4-2 victory, and even received his first curtain call of his career.  Per Cary Osborne at Dodger Insider:

“That’s fun, that put a smile on my face,” Seager said of the atmosphere in the dugout after he hit home run No. 3 — a liner over the short fence in left field off Atlanta reliever Hunter Cervenka. “That’s something you really enjoy and soak in.”

His homers marks the first time a Dodger rookie has hit three dingers in one game since Don Demeter in 1959.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1964 Sandy Koufax would throw his third career no-hitter against the Phillies.  In 1968 Don Drysdale threw his sixth consecutive shutout of the season.  His scoreless streak was extended to 54 innings.  This is also the day Robert Kennedy made note of Drysdale's efforts in a speech at the Ambassador Hotel after winning the CA primary.  Soon thereafter, he would be assassinated.  In 1972 the Dodgers retired Roy Campanella's number - #39.  In 1998 the Dodgers traded Hideo Nomo to the Mets for Dave Mlicki and Greg McMichael.  Ugh! 

A Happy Belated Welcome to the Dodgers, Casey Fien!

Casey Fien has been fantastic for the Dodgers since being called up from Oklahoma City a week ago.  He has gotten into three games, and struck out seven of the ten batters he's faced; including Kris Bryant twice.

That's not to say that Fien is the answer to our bullpen prayers.  After all, three innings of work is hardly enough to go on.  Still, you gotta love the results.

Fien has shown us good control on a deceptive fastball that runs in the mid-90's and looks to have a bit of a sink to it.  This causes batters to swing and miss more often than average.  Scoutables.com tells me that his fastballs had 23% of swings miss; while 10% is league average.  His last time out, on Wednesday, he faced four batters and mowed down three of them on swinging strikes.  Hopefully, this trend continues.

In honor of his work thus far and since I had yet to officially welcome him to the team on this blog (save a post from a few weeks ago announcing his initial pickup), I decided to make a couple fantasy Baseball cards of him in Dodger Blue.  For the card on the left I using a photo taken by Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2016 and the 1992 Leaf Baseball card design.  For the Fien card on the right I grabbed another photo taken by Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2016 and the 1997 Topps Baseball card design.

Blog Kiosk: 6/3/2016 - Dodgers Links - Clayton Kershaw and Julio Urias

Julio Urias was better.  Unfortunately, better was not good enough.

Yesterday afternoon the Dodgers sent the 19-year old phenom out against the Cubs, and lost again.  This time, however, Urias lasted a full five innings.  Via Jon Weisman at Dodger Insider:

“I felt good,” Urias told reporters after the game (via SportsNet LA). “My pitches were there. Overall I felt good, but those pitches I missed, those were the ones they were able to capitalize on. … Those pitches lacked control, and they connected on them.”

Overall, he threw 79 pitches, recorded four strike outs, walked one and coughed up five earned runs.  Glaringly, Urias also gave up three homers; including a towering drive by Kris Bryant that hit the left field video board.

“He left a few balls up, and they made him pay,” Dave Roberts said. “Julio is continuing to learn. I thought he threw the ball well early on.

“I thought the game was a lot slower for him. I think he might have been a bit frustrated by some of those flares, but I really believe that he handled himself well, with great composure and great mound presence.”

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1989 the Dodgers played an 22 inning game at the Astrodome that lasted seven hours and fourteen minutes.  BTW, the Dodgers lost the game 5-4, John Shelby went a remarkable 0 for 10 at the plate, Fernando Valenzuela played first base and infielder Jeff Hamilton was the losing pitcher. 

Braves Series Starts Friday - Scheduled Autograph Sessions, Pregame Info and Other Stuff!

The next homestand starts on Friday against the Atlanta Braves, and several former Dodgers are scheduled for an autograph session with fans on Sunday.  Below are the scheduled autograph opportunities and other odds and ends for this upcoming homestand.

The Atlanta Dog will be available for this homestand only against the Braves at the Extreme Loaded Dog concession areas located on the field, loge and reserve levels. It features an all-beef hot dog topped with fried green tomatoes and spicy peach relish.

The fifth 2016 issue of the new Dodger Insider magazine, featuring Kenley Jansen on the cover, will be available at Dodger Stadium.  (see it on the left.  The Dodgers merged their previously separate Playbill and Dodger Insider magazines into one publication (at least 80 pages per issue) with a new edition available each homestand.  They are distributed at auto gates (one per vehicle) and via Fan Services for those who use alternate transportation.

Now You Too Can Be That Bobblehead Guy

Have you ever wanted to get into the business of Baseball?  How about joining the Dodgers on the entertainment side of things?

The Dodgers now have an opening for someone to play the "Bobblehead Character" (not a mascot) at Dodger Stadium.  Here is what it says:

The Bobblehead Character will enhance the fan experience both at games as well as community events. The ideal candidate must always display a high-energy, enthusiastic, professional, and friendly attitude to Dodger fans at games and outside appearances.

So if you have the energy and the wherewithal to wear a heavy, no doubt heat inducing, costume then you should apply now.
