Dodgers 60th Anniversary Sets - The First Two - #1 to #14

It's about time I put up pics of these cards.

As you know, the Dodgers have been giving away limited edition 60th Anniversary Collector Card Sets to fans. Six different sets are available, and so far only the first two sets have been given out. The third set is being released at today's game. Unfortunately, I hadn't attended either of the first two prior giveaway games. Thankfully, fellow blogger and fanatic Dodger fan Andy from the Stadium Fantasium blog was there, and he was kind enough to pass along the first two sets.

Below are complete scans of the first two sets. As you can see, the first set celebrates the 50's and 60's and borrows the vintage design of the 1965 Topps Baseball card set. The second set focuses on the 70's and uses the 1977 Topps Baseball card design.

As for the players in the set, I do find it unusual that the first six cards in both sets feature the exact same players -- Bellinger, Turner, Seager, Jansen, Taylor and Utley. The seventh card is of a Dodger star from the era the set celebrates: Koufax from the 60's and Sutton from the 70's. I wonder if the set being given out today will include Hershiser, Valenzuela or Gibson as the seventh card in the set.

Fernando was the only choice to throw out the ceremonial first pitch to begin the Mexico Series between the Padres and Dodgers. Per Jesse Sanchez at MLB.com:

"Fernando deserved to throw out the first pitch and many more things because of who he is," said Jarrin, who famously served as Valenzuela's interpreter. "He's so popular in Mexico and he's so popular in this city. People still scream his name in Los Angeles when they show his image, and he's so beloved everywhere he goes. It is the perfect way to start this series."

2018 Topps Now - #171 - The Combined No No

On Friday the Dodgers did something remarkable. Not only did they hammer out nine hits for four runs (a rarity these days), but also threw their very first franchise combined no-hitter -- just the 12th ever in Major League history and 23rd no no in Dodgers' franchise history.

This weekends games in Monterrey, Mexico against the Padres are likely to feel like home games to the 'Boys in Blue'. Per Bill Shaikin at the LA Times:

"It's going to be awesome," Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen said. "The Dodger fans, the majority of them, are Mexicans. No disrespect to any other people. 

"They are die-hard fans. No matter how we are doing, they will always be supportive."

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1919 Brooklynites attend the very first major league game played on a Sunday in Brooklyn due to a new law passed by the NY Legislature called the "Sunday Baseball Bill." The Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field, 6-2. In 1966 Willie Mays hits his 512nd career home run off of Dodgers hurler Claude Osteen at Candlestick Park. The homer breaks the NL All-Time home run mark held by Mel Ott. In 1976 it is declared Rick Monday Day in Illinois. The then Cubs outfielder is presented with the flag he saved from an on-field burning attempt at Dodger Stadium. In 2009 the Dodgers win their 11th straight game to start the season -- breaking a NL record. In 2012 the Dodgers signed free agent outfield Bobby Abreu to a one-year $9 million contract.
