Blog Kiosk: 8/17/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

This time it's Puig.

Last night the Dodgers recorded their eighth walk-off win when trailing into the last frame of the game, and this time Yasiel Puig was the one who put in the final nail. With two on he hit a blistering liner that went to the left-centerfield wall. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“You never want to use superlatives with players, but I think that Yasiel cares as much as anyone, or more than anyone, as far as wanting to be the guy and his care and his try,” said manager Dave Roberts.
On another note, Yu Darvish exited the game after the sixth inning due to some advice from our ace. Per ESPN:
"Between innings, I talked to Kershaw, and he asked me, 'How do you feel?' '' Darvish said through an interpreter. "I told him, 'I feel something in my back,' and he said, 'We need you really bad in six weeks.'

  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1982 the Dodgers and Cubs played a 17 inning game that was temporarily halted at a tie, 1-1, because of darkness (this was before Wrigley Field had lights). The next day they begin where they left off. The Dodgers would eventually win on a sacrifice fly by Dusty Baker in the 21st inning. In 1992 Dodgers hurler Kevin Gross no-hit the Giants at Dodger Stadium, 2-0. Watch the last out of the game, as called by Vin Scully, here. Per a NY Times article:
"The later it got, the more the adrenaline started pumping," Gross said. "It was just a blur when that last out was made."
“Tommy Hawkins was a dear friend and one of the most respected people I have had the honor to know,” said former general manager Fred Claire. “Tommy had an amazing ability to leap, and he reached heights in basketball, baseball, friendships, business and life that few have ever accomplished.”
"I don't even like talking about wins and losses, because that's not really what it is for us at the end of the day," (Rich Hill) said. "It's really about the effort we give out on the field and the consistency of that effort. If you look at this team, there is something different, and it's that intensity all 25 guys bring every single night."
...
"Nobody pays attention to that," Seager said. "Nobody is worried about it, nobody is worried about the win streaks and all that. It's been our philosophy from the beginning to grind at-bats, to grind out series, to be as relentless as possible."
  • Per Joshua Thornton at MLB.com; "Kershaw pleased with two-inning sim game." JP Hoornstra captured his pitching on twitter, here (against Utley), here (against Segedin), here (against Pederson), here (Utley, again) and here (Segedin, again -- makes good contact on first pitch).
  • Per Matthew Moreno at Dodger Blue; "Yasiel Puig, Wild Horse Foundation Provide For Los Angeles Unified School District."
“We just had a visit from Yasiel Puig, who brought us a check for $1,000 for the school library,” Esperanza Elementary School principal Brad Rumble said. “It’s the first day of school here at Esperanza and it’s unbelievable.
  • Yu Darvish celebrated his birthday yesterday with an awesome Dodger cake, per his instagram here and here.
