Some Historical Base Ball Treasures at Heritage Auctions - Civil War Base Ball and Ruth's 1923 Championship Watch

Along with the Jackie Robinson letter I shared yesterday, Heritage Auctions also has some historical Base Ball memorabilia worth noting.  Heck, some of these items need to find their way to a museum because they are too great not to be shares with the public.

Featured below is a Civil War era baseball, and it's purported to be the most thoroughly documented ball available.

From the auction description:
"Captain France was a member of the Seventeenth New York zouaves, who were attached to the Sixteenth corps under the command of N.S. Granger. There were a number of good ballplayers in the Seventeenth and when, in May '64, the corps was encamped at Decatur, Ala., the baseball enthusiasts conceived the plan of sending to Nashville, 130 miles north, for a ball and bat.

The plan was executed and many a hot game of baseball was played on the parade grounds. When the call for dress parade came and a game was in progress, it was customary for the man having the ball in his hand at the time to keep it until the next game was played.

In this manner the ball was carried on Sherman's march to the sea, through the Atlanta campaign, its siege and capture, then through the Carolinas campaign to Raleigh, Richmond and finally to Washington. At Washington, while the soldiers were waiting to be mustered out, the last game of ball was played. When it was over Lieutenant Barnett was walking off the field with Captain France. 'Here, France,' he called, and gave the ball an underhand toss into France's waiting hands."

The next item is a 1863 Civil War Base Ball lithograph titled, "Union Prisoners at Salisbury, NC".  This is one of the earliest representations of the game of Base Ball.  Click on the pic to embiggen.

This next item has received a lot of press coverage.  Below is Babe Ruth's 1923 New York Yankees World Championship watch.  This was the official prize from the Commissioner of Baseball for New York's first World Series win.  It was eventually given by Ruth to friend Charlie Schwefel, a Manhattan hotel magnet.  Then, it was given to his nephew, Lewis Fern, who was a close friend and personal caddy to Babe Ruth.  As of this posting, the watch is priced at $260,000.00  Do not be surprised if it approaches 7 figures.

Blog Kiosk: 2/6/2014 - Dodgers Links - Hank Aaron, Yasiel Puig and Signing Justin Turner

"It's almost time for Dodger baseball" - Vin Scully.  Pic above via @SportsNetLA on twitter.
Puig nodded his head the way he knew he should. But a thick moment passed before he told Colletti, "Where I come from, there is no tomorrow. We embrace today."
  • This should be seen as a move to improve infield depth.  Via Eric Stephen at True Blue LA, "Justin Turner reportedly signs minor league deal with Dodgers".  BTW, Justin is on twitter: @redturn2.  Follow him here.  Justin is from Long Beach and played college ball at CSU Fullerton.

Weekend Autograph Opportunities: Meet Vince Ferragamo in Rowland Heights

Here are this weekends autograph opportunities and events throughout the Southland. As always, be sure to check the Blue Heaven Calendar for other events (a link can always be found on the tab at the top of this page, just left of center), and always confirm with the establishment. Everything is subject to change.  Please email me with any tips about upcoming events in Southern California.  As the rest of the week progresses I'll update this post with other events (if there are any) as I become aware of them.  Also, I don't always list every event below, so be sure to check my Calendar.  I always try to favor free signing events over paying events.  Click on any pic to embiggen.

Heritage Auctions: Writing to Jackie Robinson

In 1952 a young Syracuse University student named Richard wrote to Jackie Robinson in hopes that he could provide some insight.  Although we do not know exactly what Richard asked, I think it's fair to say that he wondered why Baseball?  Why does the public follow the game so closely?

Well, Jackie does his best to provide his opinion in this letter that is now up for sale at Heritage Auctions.

Read what he had to say below:
I received your letter and I believe that the reason for the publics staunch support and interest in baseball is that it has offered complete relaxation in a very enjoyable manner.  This may appear paradoxical, as we all know how avid fans of the team become excited, elated or saddened depending on the play.  In Baseball the interest and enjoyment offers such diversion, as it is complete relaxation from the daily chores.

Spectators have passed on their enthusiasm to their children.  It appears people are more anxious for entertainment where they can relax and take their minds off emergencies.  The army has established and maintained Baseball in occupation countries as they have proven it relieves tension and makes for relaxation.

I hope the above will prove helpful for your thesis.
I think Jackie is on the ball with his assessment.  We fans follow because it's a enjoyable departure from everyday life, and as Terence Mann said in 'Field of Dreams':
It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.
A game like Baseball allows us to sit back and revel in the majesty of the play, and in the wonder of loss and gain.

As of this posting, the above letter is currently at $700.00.  I wouldn't be surprised if it reached even higher; considering its content.  BTW, I have a couple more post coming soon featuring both Dodgers and general Baseball memorabilia that are for sale; including some Civil War Baseball treasures.
