Dodgers Blog Kiosk: 8/15/2012

A Blue Heaven Happy Belated Birthday to Magic Johnson.  He turned 53 yesterday.  Pic via twitter @Dodgers.
This could be special. Though their rivalry dates back to the Benjamin Harrison presidency, when the Dodgers were the Brooklyn Bridegrooms of the American Association, and although it gave us one of the game's most iconic moments in Bobby Thompson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" in 1951, and although it remained intact when the two teams switched coasts in 1958, the Dodgers and Giants aren't often good at the same time.
  • Left Field Pavilion shares a great vintage photo of some LA Dodgers bat boys with Walter Alston.
  • Gaslamp Ball shares a bit of fan fiction centered around our very own Steve Garvey and his love of burritos.  Check it out.  It's a gas.
There was no dobut about it: That was definitely a burrito McKeon had stashed in the dresser drawer second from the top. Garvey knew that smell anywhere. It was hard to listen to what was being said to him. Garvey's brain was salivating. LITERALLY.

"Jack, I think my brain is melting."

"What the hell are you talking about, Steve? Pay attention."
  • Via Tom Bartsch at Sports Collectors Digest, the cards from the Black Swap find will be making an appearance at the Long Beach Coin Show from September 6th to the 8th.
  • Steven with Zim's Autographs is everywhere when it comes to autographs.  He recently got Shin Soo-Choo at a free public signing at a bank.
  • This looks promising.  The NHL players made a counter-proposal that looks fair.  Instead of taking the route the owners took by offering something ridiculous, the players offered something that looks thoughtful and reasonable.  Maybe a lock-out isn't on the horizon.  Via KuklasKorner.
  • Michael Grange with SportsNet has a different take on things.  He thinks a lock-out is assured.
It’s a clever mechanism to maintain the status quo, and Fehr should be congratulated for thinking outside that ever-shrinking box.

Unfortunately, the owners want that box to keep shrinking and they want to cut their No. 1 expense: player salaries.

Fehr’s proposal doesn’t do that in what the owners would define as a meaningful way and sets the stage for player costs staying much higher than the owners want for the foreseeable future.

A Giant Suspended for PED- Should We be Surprised?

Ya know what's great about being a Dodgers fan?

Being able to rain on the parade of a good Giants season.

Today, we get word from Jorge Arangure, a senior Baseball writer for ESPN, that their surprising star of 2012 , Melky Cabrera has been caught using the juice.  Via his twitter @jorgearangure.  BTW, in case you are in disbelief.  SportsCenter also confirmed it on twitter, here.
(twitter link)

Considering Melky's stats for this season compared to what he has done historically, I guess we shouldn't be surprised.  Look at his career stats below, via Baseball Reference.

As you can see, there was a remarkable jump in stats starting in 2011 while he was with the Kansas City Royals.  Then an even bigger jump this season with the Giants.  I guess we now know why that was.

Hat Tip: MLB Trade Rumors

UPDATE:  Melky has apparently admitted to the mistake, via twitter @MLB.  At least he was man enough to own up to his error.

UPDATE II: And this is how I feel.

2012 Goodwin Champions Union Flag Relic Cards

The other day, I went on a little bit of a rant about Upper Deck's inclusion of a Civil War Union/American flag that had been cut up and placed within relic cards for their 2012 Goodwin Champions set.  It just seemed like a really bad idea, and left a bad taste in my mouth.  After a couple of days, I still don't know if I like the idea.

Nevertheless, I thought it necessary to see if any examples had popped up on eBay.  As you can see below, here are two of the cards on auction.

So, what do you think?

eBay: Nashua Catcher, Roy Campanella

When I saw this on eBay I knew I had to share it here.  This is a 1946 press photo produced by Fraser Foto Service of Nashua Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella.

Campanella played one season for the Dodger farm club in Nashua, New Hampshire before going on to play for the Dodgers AAA team in Montreal.  Roy batted .290 with 13 home runs, and had a slugging percentage of .477.  On a side note, other notable future Dodgers on his team in Nashua include Don Newcombe and Walter Alston.
