Shoulder Inflammation Sends Ryu to the DL

If recent history is any indication, this move by the Dodgers is just precautionary and not indicative of something worse.  After all, they played it safe by not allowing Greinke to start in Australia and held back Kershaw when he felt something unusual in his shoulder.

This time, they decide to place Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 15-day disabled list due to some recent left-shoulder inflammation.  It cropped up after his last start, and it uncharacteristically had yet to disappear.  Per a report from Ken Gurnick, they do not have plans for an MRI just yet.

Also, the Dodgers do a little more shuffling by sending down Paco Rodriguez (who was just called up on Thursday) and Red Patterson (who started yesterday as a 26th man), and bring back up Chone Figgins (who was sent down on April 21st) and Jose Dominguez (who was sent down on the 27th).

Per a Dodgers press release:
The Los Angeles Dodgers today recalled infielder/outfielder Chone Figgins and right-handed pitcher Jose Dominguez, placed left-handed pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu on the 15-day disabled list with left-shoulder inflammation (retroactive to April 28), returned left-handed pitcher Paco Rodriguez to Triple-A Albuquerque and optioned right-handed pitcher Red Patterson to Triple-A Albuquerque

Figgins, who will be appearing in his second stint with the club, has played in nine games this season (nine PH appearances), going 1-for-6 with three walks for a .444 on-base percentage. The 12-year Major League veteran was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on April 21 and played in eight games for the Isotopes, batting .280 (7-for-25) with two doubles and three runs scored.

Dominguez returns to the club for his fourth stint this season, having pitched in four games. The hard-throwing was optioned to Albuquerque on Sunday and last appeared in a game for the Isotopes Monday vs. Salt Lake, firing 2.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. On the season, Dominguez has pitched in four games at Albuquerque, allowing only one earned run in 5.0 innings (1.80 ERA).
There is no word yet on who will take over Ryu's spot on the rotation this coming Sunday, so twitter is filled with speculation.  Some possibilities include Stephen Fife and Zach Lee.  All I do know is that Puig has certainly given Ryu a big hug in hopes it makes him feel better.

More Dodger Memorabilia at SCP Auctions

Following up on yesterday's post featuring some Dodger memorabilia originating from the Newport Sports Museum that are available for sale, I now share some other Dodger collectibles that can be found at SCP Auctions.  For instance, check out a couple Dodger World Series Championship rings below.

Dodger World Series Championship rings for 1981 and 1988 are below.  They come directly from the family of former Dodger scout Don Gutteridge.  He was a scout for the Dodgers from 1975 to his retirement in 1992.  Via a SABR biography on Gutteridge by David Anderson:
Gutteridge summed up his career in saying, “I was at the right place at the right time and had a good career.” He credited an experience he had when he was 12 years old. “We would have revival meetings. … I went to the preacher after the service and told him how much I wanted to be a ballplayer,” Gutteridge said. “He told me to talk to the Lord, and I did. I prayed to spend my life in baseball and my prayers were answered.”

The below watch is said to come originally from Hollywood celebrity columnist Army Archerd for his participation in a Dodgers Hollywood Stars game.

Blog Kiosk: 5/2/2014 - Dodger Links - Dodgers 10,000 Win Pin, Dan Haren and Puig's Phantom Lean

Juan Uribe and Hanley Ramirez were pimpin' it last night.  The above photo was taken just before the Dodgers flight to Miami.  Do you think Uribe's getup qualifies as one of his outrageous outfits?  Pic above via @Dodgers on twitter.
  • Via Ken Gurnick at MLB.com, "Dodgers eyeing Monday return for Kershaw."
  • Ken also writes about a replay challenge from yesterday's first game in, "Mattingly wins challenge on close play at second."  It involved Hanley making a leaping grab then shovelling it to Dee.

“I still don’t throw it much in bullpens between starts, and then I’ll throw 15 in a game, so it’s not like I’m using it that much,” Haren said of the splitfinger.
  • Oh, man!  I really want this pin.  Via Jon Weisman at Dodger Insider, in celebration of the Dodgers 10,000th franchise win they will be giving out a commemorative pin to the first 40,000 attendees to their Wednesday, June 4th game against the White Sox.  Check out the pin on the right.  Also, a special $10 ticket special is available for the game.  Get info here.

The LADF will launch Dodgers RBI on Saturday with Dodgers RBI PlayerFest (presented by Bank of America) from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon at Dodger Stadium. More than 1,000 children ages 5-18 who will participate in Dodgers RBI this season through City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks, Boys and Girls Club of Venice and the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton will be in attendance.
  • Let's hope it never comes to this.  Via Wendy Thurm at FanGraphs, "The MLB Commissioner’s Power To Discipline A Donald-Sterling Like Owner."
Note the similarities and differences between the MLB and NBA Constitutions. The MLB Constitution gives the Commissioner broad authority to fine, suspend and remove owners who act contrary to “the best interests of baseball.” In the NBA, the Commissioner can fine and suspend (but not remove) an owner who “gives, makes, issues, authorizes or endorses any statement having, or designed to have, an effect prejudicial or detrimental to the best interests of basketball.”  So while both leagues demand that owner always act in the best interests of the sport, MLB’s Commissioner has the power to remove an owner, and the NBA’s does not.
