Blog Kiosk: 5/18/2017 - Dodgers Links - Sele, Buehler and Clayton Kershaw

Kershaw is the ace in more ways than one. Not only did he stop a Dodger losing streak by defeated our biggest rival, but he did it while paying no attention to a bench-clearing that would have distracted a lesser player. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
"Just a lot of talk, so I was just going to keep on playing, if it's the same to everyone else," said Kershaw, who allowed three hits over seven scoreless innings.
...
"That's pretty much what you want to see from your starter," said Grandal, whose two-run double in the first inning on a pitch nearly in the dirt helped set off Cueto's suspicions. "He concentrates on the goal. Today, that was winning the game. That tells you he's in the zone and not worried about too many things."

  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1929 the Brooklyn Dodgers out-slugged the Phillies, 20-16. Hilariously, Dodger hurler Ray Moss allowed ten earned runs and still recorded his first win of the season. In 1931 Dodger outfielder Babe Herman hits for the cycle against the Reds at Ebbets Field.

  • Per Ken Gurnick and Chris Haft at MLB.com; "Benches clear after Grandal-Cueto exchange."
  • Per Bill Plunkett at the OC Register; "Franklin Gutierrez, Luis Avilan step forward to support their country in crisis."
“You guys have it easy right now compared to what’s going on in Venezuela,” the Dodgers reliever said, referencing the divisiveness that roils through American politics these days. “Right now my country is a mess. Everything right now is pretty much a mess. They’re kind of in the middle of a civil war right now.”
The Dodgers have been careful with Buehler, maxing his pitch count at around 65. However many pitches he has, Buehler is using them to great effect. Like Ivan Drago, every batter Buehler faces, he destroys. In just 3.2 innings Wednesday for Double-A Tulsa, the former Vanderbilt ace struck out nine, touching 100 mph according to the Drillers’ Twitter account. Buehler has struck out 39 of the 95 batters he’s faced and opponents are hitting just .195 against him.
  • This is a really great Baseball card set. Fuji at the Chronicles of Fuji shares scans (both front and back) of the entire 1972 Kellogg's All-Time Greats set. It worth a look.
  • You know those Baseball Sports Crates that are debuting this season? Well, they have partnered with Topps to make exclusive Baseball cards that will be inserted into their crates, and Clayton Kershaw is included. Check out the Kershaw card below. BTW, I have personally ordered a subscription to this, so once it arrives I will be sure to share it. You can check out the rest of the cards here, at Sports Collectors Daily.
