2019 Topps Now - #194 & #195 - Turner & Ryu's Big Night

Last nights monumental efforts by Ryu and Turner has earned them their first 2019 Topps Now cards of the season. Ryu recorded a complete game shutout against the Atlanta Braves. He even had a perfect game going in to the sixth inning. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
Tyler Flowers spoiled Ryu’s perfect game by grounding a single past a diving Turner and into left field leading off the sixth inning. Turner joked if he’d realized at the time that Ryu was working on a perfect game, he might have called on superhero powers.
“When I looked up and saw the '1' flash on the board, I wanted to kick myself a little bit more,” said Turner. “Try to dive and ‘Go-Go Gadget Arm’ that ball into the six-hole.”

Blog Kiosk: 5/8/2019 - Dodgers Links - Ryu's Near Perfection

On an evening when his family and friends were in the house -- heck, it was even his mother's birthday -- Hyun-Jin Ryu absolutely dominated. He threw his first complete game shutout since his rookie season in 2013 and even took a perfect game into the sixth inning before giving up a single to Tyler Flowers. Overall, he struck out six while walking none and yielded just four hits to earn his fourth victory of the season. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
“It was good to watch Hyun-Jin do his thing,” said Roberts, who never called down to the bullpen for even a warm-up. “Complete domination tonight. His feel, to strike the breaking ball, has always been elite. It’s hard to say he’s under the radar, but he’s an elite pitcher in baseball. It makes it fun to sit back and watch. I think the only time he broke a sweat was when he was covering first base.”

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1941 the Giants and Dodgers play an Army-Navy Relief exhibition game that raises over $60,000 for the Navy Relief Fund in front of 24,000 fans. Brooklyn edged out their rivals, 7-6, on a Dolph Camilli home run in the seventh inning. BTW, everyone, including the umpires, coaches and players, paid admission to enter Ebbets Field. In 1973 Willie Stargell hit an Andy Messersmith pitch out of Dodger Stadium. this was the second time he has accomplished the feat at the stadium and only the second time it had ever happened in its history. In 1981 Fernando Valenzuela throws his seventh straight victory to open the season, shutting out the Mets by a score of 1-0 at Shea Stadium.
