eBay: Dedicate This

I've been waiting forever to post up this photo from a closed eBay auction. Why? I dunno. I guess I was thinking that I would do some research to figure out the event. Unfortunately, there is no date associated with the pic, but it does have all of the hallmarks of a original Sporting News photo.

It features owner Walter O'Malley, Dodger manager Walter Alston and Hoboken, New Jersey Mayor John J. Grogan at a dedication ceremony. It seems likely it is from the opening of a park for little league teams or the opening of the little league season. The nicest part is the championship banner. I'm sure Brooklyn fans were happy to see it wherever they went.

  1. This is a very nice idea whoever thought if it by placing the banner where Dodger fans can see it! It reminds them of the great achievement of their team.

  2. That plaque was placed on the location where the Elysian Fields once were. That was the grassy park where the Knickerbockers and the New York Nine played the first real game of base-ball in 1846. Why the Dodgers were sponsoring it I don't know, maybe because they played games next door in Jersey City in 1956 and 1957 and this was O'Malley's way of buttering up the local Jersey politicians? As a side note, the famous music venue called "Maxwells" is now standing where 3rd base probably was. I saw many a great show there back in the day...
