Blog Kiosk: 6/1/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Ryu was excellent. He went six strong innings, striking out four, walking just one and allowing only one earned run. Per Joe Harris at MLB.com:
"During the warmup, when I was doing long tosses in the bullpen, I found out that all my four pitches were working to a pretty good level, so I knew I was going to have a pretty good outing," Ryu said through an interpreter. "I just wanted to make sure that I mixed them up."
Unfortunately, the Dodgers offense took the day off. They could only muster a single run in the 2-1 loss.

  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1955 the Brooklyn Dodgers set a franchise record for hitting six home runs in a game during their victory over the Milwaukee Braves at Ebbets Field. Duke Snider hit three homers in the contest (becoming the first Dodger to do it twice), to go along with home runs by Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese and Roy Campanella. In 1962 Don Drysdale defeated the Philadelphia Phillies for the 13th consecutive time - a streak that began in 1958. I remember this next incident so well. In 1997 Wilton Guerrero shattered hit bat during an at-bat and immediately scrambled to pick up the bat pieces instead of running to first base. Obviously, home plate umpire Steve Ripley got suspicious and subsequently searched the bat remains. He found cork and ejected Guerrero from the game. He would be suspended for eight games.

  • ICYMI: The Dodgers recalled reliever Grant Dayton this morning. Left-handed reliever Adam Liberatore has been placed on the 10-day DL.
  • European Baseball fans should make note of this. It will take place on July 4th. Per David Churchill at the Evening Standard; "Boston Red Sox to face LA Dodgers in 'Home Run Derby' baseball event at London's Hyde Park."
Ex-pro MLB legends Carlos Peña, Cliff Floyd and Shawn Green will be among the big hitters in the Boston Red Sox v LA Dodgers “Home Run Derby”.
"J.T. took swings in the cage on the field, did a little bit of baserunning," Roberts said. "Where yesterday I'd say he ran about 80 percent, today it was about at 70 percent. So tomorrow he'll be off. When he'll return, I still don't know. We're still for me, realistically, a week away from him to think about being back with us."

Per the Emmys.com site, the Los Angeles Area Governors Awards goes to “an individual, company, or an organization for outstanding, innovative and visionary achievement in the arts, sciences or management of television that has made an industry-wide contribution which is either of a cumulative nature or so extraordinary and universal in nature as to be beyond the scope of the awards presented in the categories and areas of achievement.”

Previous winners include famed L.A. broadcasters Vin Scully of the Dodgers and Chick Hearn of the Lakers. The 78-year-old Miller announced his retirement last season after 44 seasons with the Kings.

“I’m always appreciative whenever I’m mentioned with those announcers and this is a great honor from the LA Area Emmys, the Governors Award,” the Miller said. “I know some outstanding people have won that before, I am humbled and honored to receive that recognition and look forward to that night at the Emmys.”
