Blog Kiosk: 1/23/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

The first leg of the Dodgers 2018 Community Tour yesterday included an afternoon with firefighters and first responders at Dodger Stadium. They took part in batting practice and had an opportunity to meet with a whole bunch of Dodgers'. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“We’ve been shoulder to shoulder with our citizens that have just endured an incredible situation, and it does wear on our personnel,” Millers said. “For the Dodgers organization just to give us a little time on the field where many of us have dreamt to be, it’s fantastic.”
Wood said he knows how crazy the last couple months had to be for all the firefighters who were at Dodger Stadium on Monday, so he’s glad they got to have a day to just enjoy themselves.
“You see the news with all the wildfires and everything,” Wood said. “I know it’s probably taken a pretty big toll on a lot of these guys and a lot of hours and work they’ve had to put in. To have a day just for them out here and to be a part of it, it’s pretty cool.”

  • You know those homes that overlook Dodger Stadium on its western side? Well, one of them is currently listed for sale at $699,000. Go here to check it out.
  • Per Dick Gross at The Herald News; "Teammates, radio partner special to Coomer." Former Dodger, Ron Coomer, shares and interesting Dodger story:
“I was with the Dodgers, and I thought, ‘This team stinks,’ ” Coomer said. “Nobody plays to win. It was the most selfish team I ever played on.
“Well, then we signed Rickey Henderson, and in a month he knew three people on the team. He called me Crooms. With two days left in the season, when he had been with us for three months, he asks me, ‘Crooms, what’s the skipper’s name?’
“It was Jim Tracy.”
MD: Yourself, Justin Turner, and Cody Bellinger all developed your power in professional baseball. Is your clubhouse a think tank about hitting, where everyone can bounce ideas off each other, or is everyone more confident in their ability knowing who they are as players and just go out and do their business?
CT: I think it is a combination of both. We all understand ourselves and what works best for us. We do have excellent communication amongst the players. I’d say not just about mechanics, but approach against an individual pitcher we are going to face. That is one of the things that makes us very successful. We have hitters meetings before every game, about how we are going to approach that pitcher. We have a pretty good group of veteran guys. Hearing what they have to say, and the approach they are going to take against that guy, and what has worked for them in the past. That is beneficial information to take in before a game. Being able to hear guys like Chase Utley, Justin Turner, and Andre Ethier. How they have had success against this guy in the past, it helps. Especially for guys like me, a lot of the guys we face I have never seen before.
