Blog Kiosk: 7/31/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Am I the only one who wishes teams would stop doing this?

Last night Dodgers magic continued unabated. This time around though, newest Dodger Kyle Farmer played hero when he recorded his very first Major League hit in the 11th inning to drive in two runs; including the game winner. As teams are wont to do, the entire club immediately encircled their prey on the field and proceeded to strip him of his clothes. It was hilarious to watch, and I fretted the whole time. Nevertheless, I get the impression Farmer didn't mind. Heck, maybe he knew this day was his destiny. Per Chris Haft and Joshua Thornton at MLB.com:
"I told him, joking, in like the seventh or eighth inning," said Enrique Hernandez, "I was like 'Dude this game has Kyle Farmer written all over it. You're going to win this game.' And [Farmer] looked at me and said, 'I know.'"

  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1983 Dodger skipper Walter Alston is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1984 Baseball as an Olympic demonstration sport begins its Olympic tournament at Dodger Stadium. In 2004 the Dodgers receive outfielder Steve Finley and backstop Brent Mayne from the Diamondbacks for Koyie Hill, Reggie Abercrombie and southpaw Bill Murphy. They also traded outfield speedster Dave Roberts to Boston for Henri StanleyIn 2006 the Dodgers traded shortstop César Izturis to the Cubs for future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux. In 2008 the Dodgers traded for Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox (including a three team trade with Pittsburgh) for Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris (who go to the pirates). Pirates outfielder Jason Bay goes to Boston.

  • I'd like to extend a hearty congratulations to Rachel Robinson. She received the Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum on Saturday afternoon. Per Richard Justice at MLB.com:
"We are so proud of the nearly 100 percent graduation rate of our Jackie Robinson Foundation scholars," she said. "It makes me proud that our 1,500 alumni display an ongoing commitment to community service and stay very active in that area."
These works mean that the heart and spirit of Jackie and Rachel Robinson will continue to impact the world for years to come.
"For me, today is a brilliant source of encouragement," he said. "I've felt so wonderful since I've been here, and I thank you all."
The former Vanderbilt star, who was 10-for-22 in a short stay in Rookie ball, blasted his first homer in full-season ball Sunday in Great Lakes’ 7-5 loss to Lansing (Dodgers). Kendall was one of the toolsiest players in the 2017 draft but fell to pick No. 23 on concerns about his ability to make consistent contact.
"Andre took batting practice and looked really good," Roberts said. "I was looking at the intensity and he was kind of letting go. … Again, I think with Adrian and the same with Andre, just seeing the aggressive swings and seeing pitches come out the first time live. So that was a good step in the right direction for both of those guys."
  • Awesome! Nachos Grade shares a brief interview with Michal Kapral -- "Joggler" featured in 2017 Topps Allen & Ginter set:
Topps reached out to me to ask me about being featured in the 2017 Allen & Ginter set. I collected Topps baseball cards when I was younger and still have them, so I was pretty much over the moon when I got the offer, and said yes right away. They sourced the photograph, which was from the Boston Marathon and wrote their own blurb. I thought it was hilarious that they would be including a joggler among their list of World's Champions, but hey, I had worked as hard as any other athlete in setting that world record! I think I knew I'd have a card in early 2017, but didn't know what they would look like until much later.
  • Congrats to Adrian Beltre! I will always consider you a Dodger. Via MLB on twitter:
