Blog Kiosk: 5/3/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Can't anyone stay healthy. This is starting to get beyond frustrating.

As you know, Hyun-Jin Ryu left last nights game during the second inning after experiencing a left groin sprain. Weirdly, the strain occurred after he threw a 64 MPH curveball (per JP Hoornstra on twitter). BTW, he's going to have an MRI. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
"It doesn't feel good," Ryu said through an interpreter. "This seems to be worse than the ones in the past. Definitely very disappointed. I came into the season very healthy and had very good performances in the season. At this point, I'm very frustrated and very disappointed."

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1947 Branch Rickey makes a trade that sends a signal to the Dodgers clubhouse - He will not waver in his commitment to breaking the color barrier and supporting Jackie Robinson. He trades Kirby Higbe, Dixie Howell, Cal McLish, Hank Behrman and Gene Mauch to Pittsburgh for Al Gionfriddo and $100,000. Higbe is the special target of this trade, as he openly disapproved of Robinson as a teammate. In 1986 Ron Cey hit his 300th and 301st career home runs. He did it as a Cub against the Giants.

  • LOL! Per Ted Anderson at SF Gate; "Muni responds to San Franciscans' 'outrage' over new 'Dodger blue' logo."

Muni responded on its Twitter account: "The Dodgers don't have a monopoly on blue :) The blue was chosen to put us more in sync with other city agencies that utilize the color, as well as an homage to departments within our agency — such as DPT — that have had blue as their primary color."
Muni posted similar responses to several other commenters who were upset with the new logo design.
However, the knee-jerk reaction against perceived Dodger colors may have obscured a more obvious Bay Area connection. "If you're looking for a sports team, it fits with Warriors blue," said Paul Rose, SFMTA spokesperson.
  • At least the bullpen didn't crumble yesterday. Via Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider; "Bullpen steps up after Dodgers lose Ryu to groin strain in second inning."
The Dodgers persevered after losing Hyun-Jin Ryu to a left groin strain after only 1 1/3 innings, with the bullpen following up allowing only a one run the next 7 2/3 innings to preserve the victory against the Diamondbacks and stop a four-game losing streak.
“They did a tremendous job to pick up Hyun-Jin,” Yasmani Grandal said to SportsNet LA’s Alanna Rizzo. “He was pointing at his groin, so hopefully he’s OK. The fact they came in and shut it down, it was huge for us.”
