Blog Kiosk: 10/23/2018 - Dodgers Links - World Series Game 1 Today!

Brothers in Arms!

The Dodgers really do seem like a tight bunch. Above we see Game 2 and 3 starters, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Walker Buehler, on the field at Fenway during yesterday's workout.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1945 Dodger President Branch Rickey announced that the team has signed two black ballplayers, shortstop Jackie Robinson and pitcher John "Needle Nose" Wright, to play with Brooklyn's Triple A team in Montreal. In 1981 the Dodgers defeated the Yankees in Game 3 of the World Series, 5-4. Fernando Valenzuela threw a nine-hit complete game. In 1998 Davey Johnson became manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

  • Memorabilia Watch: Hake's Auction has a fascinating framed display featuring telegrams and hand-written notes related to contract negotiations between then Pirates GM and former Dodgers President Branch Rickey and future Pirates Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner (Link Here). There was a salary dispute that eventually only got resolved with a trade to the Cubs. Probably the coolest item at Hakes is this fantastic 1920's era tin Baseball player toy (Link Here).

  • Per Eric Stephen at SB Nation; "The secret to the Dodgers’ success is everybody."
“You have to be completely selfless and buy into the fact that you are really just a pitcher; not a starting pitcher, not a reliever, not a closer, not a setup guy,” said starter Rich Hill, who also pitched in relief during the NLCS. “You are a pitcher, and you are here to serve the 25 guys in there to fulfill the purpose as a team.”
"We're going to get booed no matter what," Machado said. "We're not in our territory. We're going to go out and try to compete as well as we can and leave it on the field and come out with a victory tomorrow."
For Dodgers pitcher Rich Hill, a Boston native, that series was personal both then and now.
"Red Sox winning, with our manager [Dave Roberts] stealing second base," Hill said.
Matt Kemp, Dodgers outfielder: “Joe Carter, Toronto Blue Jays. My dad was best friends with his brother and he always had us watching Joe Carter play. That was the 1993 World Series and I was like, ‘Whoa! That’s pretty awesome.’
  • Fun stuff here. Per Do-Hyoung Park at MLB.com; "Fun facts about only other Red Sox-Dodgers WS: The two franchises previously met in 1916 Fall Classic."
  • I'm not a big fan of this. Per Alan Pyke at Think Progress; "Dodgers players and staff ignore striking hotel workers, cross picket line in Boston: The Dodgers are the second group of MLB scabs to hit town this postseason."
  • And we hate you too, Brady! Per TMZ Sports; "Tom Brady... I Hate the Dodgers... Red Sox Will Win!"
In fact ... when Brady was asked which L.A. player he disliked the most -- the QB said the list is MASSIVE!!
"There was a lot of them, oh my God."
But ... Tom admits Fernando Valenzuela was Brady Enemy No. 1.
