Blog Kiosk: 10/29/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

I've been absolutely swamped at work today, so I apologize for this very late post.

First of all, congrats to the Red Sox on their World Series victory.

As you can imagine, yesterday's loss sure does put a damper on the Dodger season. Nevertheless, I am hardly discouraged. I guarantee there are 28 other teams that would have killed to be in our position, so losing really only stings for a bit. Via Alden Gonzalez at ESPN:
"I think you have to realize that we are a really good team to get to go to the World Series two years in a row," Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw said, his response to a question about how the organization can improve to finally win it all. "It might not be a personnel thing; it might just be a 'play better' thing."
"The pain that you have last year, it really hurts, but the good thing is that it motivates you to get back here -- and we did," Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen said. "This one hurts, too. You can say all the good things and motivate yourself, but at the end of the day, we're still human. It's still going to hurt."

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1942 Branch Rickey, architect of the St. Louis Cardinals' farm system, resigned as their vice president. He would join the Dodgers three days later as the clubs president - taking over for Larry MacPhail who had enlisted into the Army to serve in WWII.

  • Memorabilia Watch: Steiner Auctions has the original 1932 Ebbets Field lease for the Brooklyn Dodgers (Auction Link). This was their final lease before moving across the country to Los Angeles. Here something unusual. Steiner also has Bobby Valentine's 1971 passport (Auction Link). He was a Dodger at the time of issuance. This is worth checking for just his passport photo.
  • On another note, I had to remind myself this morning that Tommy Lasorda also lost consecutive World Series' (1977 & 1978) before finally winning in 1981.
  • Via Jesse Sanchez at; "Good and bad, Manny leaves impact on Dodgers."
"I can't be more thankful. What a great organization and what a great group of guys here," Machado said. "Coming over here and getting traded halfway through the year is tough. You have to come meet new faces and new teammates, and guys you played against but don't know on a personal level. They welcomed me with open arms and every teammate has been amazing."
"Whatever decision he makes, that is with him and his family," Roberts said in a news conference afterward. "But for me, to be on his team for three years, I've learned a tremendous amount from him, and I'll take that going forward. This one hurts for him. This one hurts for all of us."

  • FYI: Three Dodgers' are heading to Japan this winter as a part of an All-Star Tour. They include Kenta Maeda, Chris Taylor and Kike Hernandez. Go here for more information.
  • This really doesn't make me feel any better, but what the heck. David Schoenfield at ESPN shares an very early 2019 Power Rankings and it has the Dodgers at #3.
