Blog Kiosk: 4/5/2017 - Dodgers Links - Kershaw's Change, Joe's Welcome and Pedro's on the Mend

Corey Seager was presented with the Silver Slugger Award prior to last nights game.  I'm sure it'll be one of many he'll receive in the future.

As for the game, the Dodgers' troubles against lefties continues.  Last night they got blanked by Padres left-hander Clayton Richards.  Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:

"Last year, we didn't hit lefties," said manager Dave Roberts, whose club was 22-24 against left-handed starters in 2016. "This year, I think we have a completely different mindset."

Unfortunately, that mindset didn't deliver.

• This Day in Dodgers History:  In 1913 25,000 fans watched the Dodgers play their first game at their new home, Ebbets Field.  It was an exhibition match that saw Brooklyn defeat the Yankees, 3-2.  Superbas (Dodgers) outfielder Casey Stengel (the future famed Yankees manager) hit the first home run at the stadium -- an inside-the-park homer in the fifth inning.

Blog Kiosk: 4/4/2017 - Dodgers Links - Kershaw, Scully and Pedro Guerrero (Get Well, Buddy!)

What a masterful game.  Appearing in his seventh consecutive Opening Day game Clayton Kershaw continued his dominance by going seven scoreless innings, allowed just one earned run, striking out eight and characteristically walked none.  He is now 5-0 with a 0.98 ERA overall on Opening Day, and the Dodgers have won all seven games he has pitched. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com: 

"I think it's a huge honor to get to do it -- but seven times is pretty crazy, I never would have guessed that," Kershaw said. "I don't really have a reason [for the success], but it's a lot of fun and I'm thankful for the opportunity."

• This Day in Dodgers History:  In 1997 Mike Piazza reached base for the eight consecutive plate appearance -- he went 3-for-3 with two walks in a Dodgers win over the Pirates.  He would fly out his next at-bat the following day.

Jackie Robinson Statue at Dodger Stadium has Been Unveiled

This year is a special one for the Dodgers and its fans.  For the first time in its history a statue will be erected at the stadium, and it will honor the great Jackie Robinson. 

Sculpted by noted New York born artist Branley Cadet, the statue is made of bronze, sits on a granite base and stands approximately 9 feet tall.  Furthermore, several notable Robinson quotes can be seen surrounding the statue along its base.

Fans in attendance for its unveiling on Jackie Robinson Day (April 15th) will not only have an opportunity to be the first fans to see it (on the reserve level), but will also receive a collectible Jackie Robinson replica statue figurine (the first 40,000 fans) when they enter the game.

For the first time we have an opportunity to check out the figurine, via the Dodgers twitter.  You can see it in the photos above and below.

MLB The Show 17 Intro Features the Voice of Vin Scully

I had my first opportunity to play MLB 17 over the weekend, and wanted to briefly share the games introductory video montage with you.  It is absolutely fantastic and a perfect segue for the opening of the 2017 Baseball season.  In fact, Dodger fans should especially love it.  A prominent voice throughout is our beloved Vin Scully -- featuring ITFDB and two timeless calls.  Watch it below.
