Blog Kiosk: 5/9/2019 - Dodgers Links - 10th Straight Victory at Home

Last night Clayton Kershaw went a strong 6.2 innings to record his second victory of the season -- which helped the Dodgers win their 10th consecutive game at home. The real hero, though is an offense that continues to out-slug their opponents. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
“It definitely feels like when you come to the ballpark we’re going to win every night,” said Kershaw, whose team responded to a six-game losing streak by going 17-6. “With the ebbs and flows of a season, you’re not always going to feel that way. But right now, it does. It feels like someone’s going to pick us up. If we’re down, we’ll come back. If we have the lead early, we’ll hold it and add on late.
"A lot of signs of a great team. Different guys contributing all the way through. If we get everybody going at the exact same time, it’s going to be pretty scary.”

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1947 the infamous photo between Phillies manager Ben Chapman and Jackie Robinson is taken before the start of this afternoons game in Philadelphia. As you know, Chapman spearheaded a vicious racially-tinged verbal assault on Robinson during their previous series in Brooklyn that resulted in extremely poor press and the wrath of Commissioner Happy Chandler. In 1983 Ron Cey returned to Dodger Stadium for the first time since being traded to the Chicago during the offseason. Cey went 3-for-4 with three singles and a run scored but his Cubs lost, 4-3.

What was almost built in Chavez Ravine near downtown? A lot of people think that the community of people who lived there were kicked off their land to build Dodger Stadium. The true story is that they were moved out to build a massive, ultra-modern public housing project designed by one of the superstars of 20th century architecture, Richard Neutra. The plan was to house 3,300 families in a sprawling complex of 24, 13-story towers and 163 two-story garden apartments.
“When you go to the games, you just wonder what it’s like to be down there. It was just fulfilling a fantasy,” said Andersen, 57. “I’ve said a couple times, I’ve been throwing that pitch since I was 7 years old in my head. It was just more than I could have expected.
His decline started to become apparent in the World Series last year when gave up two save opportunities on home runs, courtesy of Red Sox Jackie Bradley Jr. and Steve Pearce. His health and age could be contributing to his lack of velocity. Jansen is 31 years-old and just had major heart surgery last year to repair his left atrium. DRA, which stands for deserved runs average, isolates the performance of the pitcher and removes outside factors like ballpark, defense and quality of opponent. Jansen had a 2.56 DRA last year and has a 3.19 DRA so far in 2019. His best and only pitch seemed to be his signature cutter. Unfortunately, it’s becoming less effective as his average velocity has declined to 92.09 mph (2019) from 93.59 mph (2017)
