Blog Kiosk: 6/19/2019 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

There's nothing like the joy on a kids face when they meet their Baseball idol.

  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1938, a day after signing a contract with the club, Babe Ruth puts on a Dodger uniform for the first time. In 1952 Carl Erskine threw a no-hitter against the Cubs in the Dodgers' 5-0 victory at Ebbets Field. This is the first of two no-no's he would throw in his career. The only Cub to get on base was the opposing pitcher, via a walk. In 1973 Dodger outfielder Willie Davis collected his 2,000th career hit at Dodger Stadium when he two-run home run. In 1990 Dodgers catcher Gary Carter broke a National League record for career games caught at 1‚862. He passes former Dodger Al Lopez who set the record in 1946.

  • Versatility and depth, that's what it's all about. Via Ken Gurnick at -- "Dodgers committed to trying Pederson at 1st."
“This year, obviously, we’re ramping it up,” said manager Dave Roberts, who oversaw the workout. “I don’t know when it’s going to happen, but we’re going to see him play first base.”
“Just to have that option makes us a better club,” said Roberts. “He has a lot of intangibles to play the position -- the instincts, the hands, a repeatable arm stroke. You’ve just got to understand the speed of the game, from the outfield to the infield, it’s a lot faster in the infield and you can’t replicate that much.”
  • Clayton and Ellen Kershaw's 7th Annual "Ping Pong 4 Purpose" celebrity tournament is set for Thursday, August 8th at Dodger Stadium. Go here for more information.
“The ping pong event has become a highlight for us every year,” stated Ellen and Clayton Kershaw. “It’s awesome to have so many teammates and friends from the LA community come out to support a cause that is so important to us. Kershaw’s Challenge is able to give away funds to our beneficiaries because we have such a wide base of support. PingPong4Purpose serves a great purpose…and it is also a lot of fun! August 8th is shaping up to be our best event yet! A great night for a great cause—come join us!”
  • National Baseball Card Day is returning on Saturday, August 10th, and like last year every team in the league will be handing out a free pack of cards on a scheduled day. For the Dodgers, they are set to give out those cards on August 10th. You can also get free cards at participating hobby shops and (for the first time) at select large retailers like Target and Walmart. Go here for more information.
  • Wow! I can't wait to find out who will be the cream of the crop. Per Dustin Nosler at Dodgers Digest -- "Dodgers sign 46 prospects during 2018-19 international signing period."
  • Starting their professional careers right. Per Jesse Pearce at Think Blue LA -- "Hoese, Yurchak begin Dodgers careers with a bang."
Well, in his professional debut playing third base and batting in the clean-up position, Hoese’s first at-bat resulted in a double to right field, driving in the Dodgers first run. Later in the first inning, he scored the Dodgers second run of the game. In the third inning he hit another double to right field and scored another run. In the fifth inning, Hoese again doubled to left field and again scored – his third double and third run scored of the game.
