A Bathing Ape, otherwise known as BAPE, has just joined forces with Mitchell & Ness for a MLB inspired collaboration that features logo-heavy varsity jackets, baseball jerseys and a T-shirts. Four teams have been chosen -- Yankees, Mets, Angels and the Dodgers (locations where BAPE has their only US stores) -- and they are now available. Per Sophia Caraan at Hypebeast:
The BAPE x Mitchell & Ness MLB collection will be pre-released at BAPE STORE NEW YORK and BAPE STORE LOS ANGELES on September 28, and will be available globally at A BATHING APE locations, US.BAPE.COM, BAPE.COM WEB STORE and ZOZOTOWN on October 5.I guess the kids would say that this stuff is fire.
As an old guy looking in, I find myself fascinated. I say this only because I recently watched some episodes of that Netfilx show called 'Slobby's World', and quickly realized that there's this whole different subculture sprouting up around me. A culture that strangely parallels many of the things I enjoyed wearing as a youth (and even today, still) -- such as sneakers, concert t's and caps. Heck, it's almost like my sense of fashion, that I have continued to wear unabated for more than 30 years, has become cool again. Of course, I'm nowhere hear as outlandish as Slobby Robbie.
Nevertheless, these new clothes falls in line with the 'hypebeast' culture that has become popular online. It encompasses everything from vintage nostalgia to hyper-branded clothing lines and accessories that often sell in the hundreds to thousands.
Now, would I go to their store to and buy this?
Probably not. I'm a middle age man, for goodness' sake. On top of that, I know that these limited 'hyped-up' clothes will be priced way higher than I'm willing to pay. How high are they? Well, I don't have a pricing list, but I do know that t-shirts can go for $100 or more, so I imagine a jersey or jacket will run you three to five times that.
