Blog Kiosk: 6/26/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

The Dodgers are on fire. Not only are they 16-5 during the month of June, last night's win meant that they just entered a playoff spot for the first time this season (as we were helpfully told by Jon Weisman on Twitter). They sit in the second wild card spot in the National League -- half a game ahead of the Phillies. Per Kaelen Jones at MLB.com:
"So far, we're playing really good baseball," Hernandez said, "and we're looking forward to keeping it going."
I'm looking forward to that, as well.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1944 the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees play an exhibit charity game in front of 50,000 fans for the war bond movement dubbed the Tri-Cornered Baseball Game.  The Dodgers won the contest: Dodgers 5, Yankees 1, Giants 0.  Check out what I wrote about it hereIn 1999 Dodgers catcher Todd Hundley hit a three-run game-winning home run off of Giants closer Robb Nen in the ninth inning to spark a come-from-behind victory at Candelstick Park, 7-6.

You run down a young pitcher checklist and Ferguson checks all the boxes. Prototype size at 6-3, 215. Low-90s fastball which seems to play up, with occasional higher velocity spikes. A swing-and-miss curveball and a viable change-up. Simple, repeatable mechanics. Good mound presence. Sabermetrically the high strikeout rate is a big positive.
The only thing missing here is consistently plus command. His ability to locate his secondaries can vary, not surprising given his age and small amount of experience. Command isn’t exactly a weakness, as it has been quite good in some outings, it just needs to be more consistent.
  • Old friend alert. Per Chris Cwik at YahooSports; "MLB journeyman pitcher (Edwin Jackson) ties record by playing for his 13th team." BTW, the person he tied is also a former Dodger -- Octavio Dotel.
  • BTW, did you notice that 14 pitch at-bat that Matt Kemp had against Cubs pitcher Duane Underwood yesterday? Underwood, making his rookie debut last night, said the following after the game, via a tweet from Chicago Sun Times beat writer Gordon Wittenmyer:
