Blog Kiosk: 8/19/2014 - Dodger Links - "Creeping Concern over Zack Greinke's Elbow"

I absolutely love this vintage photograph of Babe Ruth as a Dodger coach in 1938.  It comes from the Leslie Jones Colelction at the Boston Public Library, posted on twitter via @ToddRadom.
"Adding a player in July and August to a contending team sends a message into the room that we appreciate what they've done and we're all on the same page to make us as good as we can get. It can give the club a burst of energy and focus. I think it's important, which is why we've done it every year but one."
Gurnick includes a list of waiver wire deals the Dodgers have made since 2006. BTW, Gurnick also throws in this little dity about a possible Greinke injury.
Nonetheless, already this month Colletti has shored up the suddenly vulnerable starting rotation with Roberto Hernandez and Kevin Correia, who have made three solid starts. Those were triggered by injuries to Josh Beckett and Hyun-Jin Ryu, as well as creeping concern over Zack Greinke's elbow (emphasis mine).
Oh, no!  Say it ain't so, Ned.
They have 36 games remaining; 21 of them are at home and 27 of them are against teams with losing records. That’s right: Los Angeles has only nine games remaining against winning teams all season — and only three road games against a winning team (San Francisco, September 12-14).
Dee opened his stance a bit, holds his hands lower, and has a pronounced crouch now.

  • The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation held their 12th annual Charity Golf Invitational yesterday.  Go here to take a look at a bunch of photos from the event, via Jon SooHooMichael Lananna at MLB.com, wrote a story about it: "Dodgers take their swings for a good cause."  Kenny Loften was in attendance.  Watch him chomp on a Double-Double below.

2013 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions Set - Dodgers Cards

Earlier in the week, Upper Deck released their Goodwin Champions set, and unfortunately it is short of Dodger players.  Heck, I had to stretch a bit to find anybody to show, so I included some former players who you wouldn't normally consider Dodgers.  There is one exception, though.  Mark McGwire is in the set, and he is currently our batting coach.

The only player in the set who was a long-time Dodger is Jake Daubert, but I have yet to find an actual pic of this card.  He is #198, and it's is a "Super-Short-Printed" card.

79 Darryl Strawberry                                90 Mark McGwire

126 Kenny Lofton

UPDATE:  Here is card #198 of former Brooklyn Dodger/Robins Jake Daubert.

The below horizontal variation is extremely limited.  According to checklist one card from the 20 card subset can be found in approximately every 1,400 packs.

126 Kenny Lofton

Kenny Lofton's College Rap Video

Over the weekend the LA Times had a great story about Kenny Lofton. In the article it mentioned that Kenny was a member of the 1988 Arizona Wildcats with other notables Sean Elliott, Steve Kerr and Tom Tolbert. More importantly, the team did what every championship caliber team did in the 80's, they made a rap video. Check it out below.

This is Our House!

With dejection and despair Angels fans marched out of the stadium after the 8th inning. It was quite a sight to see. A sea of red flowing up and out towards the exits like a fresh wound from a prickly needle. Not even the ridiculous Rally Monkey stayed. He went home too, and in his shame he decided to not show his face. It was just another beautiful Friday night in Southern California as the Los Angeles Dodger ran over the helpless Angels of Anaheim , 6-1.

What a game. I was seated in the upper reserve section just a bit towards third base in the 3rd row. These where great seats and provided an awesome view.

I saw Nomar continue his National League dominance with 2 doubles. Kenny Lofton showed he still had game as he twice singled sharply to center. Caesar is proving that he is a 3rd base gold glove candidate. To be not outdone, rookie Andre "The Giant" Ethier went 3 for 4 with a monstrous 2 run home run to center field, just passed the outstretched arms of Chone Figgins. Four hundred plus feet baby! I had fun, my friends seated to my right and left had fun and my new friends in Blue all around the stadium in attendance had fun. It was just a fun night of Dodger baseball.

I knew the Blue Army was in attendance when in the early part of the game chants of "Let's Go Dodgers" could clearly be heard by all. Imagine that. In a sea of red all we could hear was the glory of Blue. The fans had come out to cheer our team and our team responded with a clear victory.

I've got some photos that I will post later on so stay tuned. I'll also have more photos for this afternoons game. I'm heading over to Angel Stadium with a large contingent of friends. Thanks Mike! He's an old friend from elementary school (Do people really have friends from that far back?) who decided in all his grace and benevolence to foot the bill for the game for the whole group. We will be a mixture of Red and Blue fans so it won't be a united front. Nevertheless, I can't wait.

BTW, if you hear obnoxious chants of "This is Our House, " then you know its me. Say hi and join in. "This is Our House!"

The Lovable Bums Are Back!

Wow. What a slide and we are still in 1st place! Over the last 10 games the Dodgers are 3-7. Over the last 20 they are 8-12. And for some strange reason it seems OK. Afterall, at the end of the day, I love these guys.

We have a full cast of characters including old horses and young bucs- a youthful core that brings promise.
"We've got a mixture of young and old and in-between on this team. It's a perfect situation for young guys to break in. It's great to see several of them taking advantage of it."
Kent, Lofton and Sandy are the like old men by the sea. Guiding and always teaching.
"I want to show them the right path,"
Lofton says in a recent LA Times article from today.

Carl Kemp, Matt's Father added,
"Kenny Lofton said to me, 'Don't worry, Mr. Kemp, I've got him,... You can't imagine how great that made me feel. I mean, that's Kenny Lofton."
Yes. That's Kenny Lofton and this is what it means to be a Dodger. They watch over each other. They provide guidance when needed.

No worries here. Everything is unfolding as planned. Sure they may be playing like Bums now, but you wait. Even Bums find glory.
