Hanley! Hanley! Hanley!

Say that name 3 times real quick.

Hanley!  Hanley!  Hanley!

It's like in the movie Beetlejuice, but instead of calling up a ghost from the underworld you get the heroic power of a Dominican.

Hanley Ramirez is on fire, and I think it's quite clear that it is he who is the real driving force behind the Dodgers resurgence.

Tonight, Hanley did it again by doubling home the winning run in the 10th inning against the Nationals to win their 2nd game in a row.

We now find ourselves a game out of 1st place, and face the possibility of going 1/2 a game behind the Diamondbacks if they lose tonight's game against the Giants.

Wow!  It's great to finally see the Dodgers playing the way we had all hoped when the season began.

Blog Kiosk: 7/20/2013 - Dodgers Link - Claude Osteen, Tommy Davis and Don Newcombe

Puig just impacts every game he plays in.  Gif above via Dodgers tumblr.
  • Via Bob Lemke, "Thompson, Newcombe made history July 8, 1949".
I wonder if the 34,468 fans at Ebbets Field on July 8, 1949, had any idea they were witnessing baseball history when Henry Thompson of the New York Giants stepped to the plate to lead off the top of the first inning.

On the mound for the Brooklyn Dodger was Don Newcombe. It was the first time that a black batter had faced a black pitcher in a regular major league game.
Everyone remembers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. The duo pitched 11 years together in Brooklyn and in Los Angeles. Together, the pair  helped the Dodgers reach the Fall Classic five times, three of which their team won. But there’s a good chance  they wouldn’t have won their third and World Series title without the help of their third wheel, Claude Osteen.
"I came out here in 1981 and it was because of my sister-in-law, my wife's sister, she was staying out here and we kind of fell in love with it ... We've been out here ever since and we really love it out here. We've met some nice people and have some great neighbors, and I wouldn't have it any other way."
"I don't know. We'll see when I start playing," Kemp said. "It's hard to tell. Practice is totally different from the game. But I feel good."

Kemp has hit .254 with a .666 OPS in 61 games this season, and now is trying to bounce back from an injury for the second time.

"It is what it is. You've got to deal with it," he said. "When you do come back, try to not get hurt. Just dealing with it. It can be frustrating at times, but it is what it is. Injuries are part of the game."

All Hail Puig Destroyer! - They Release 5 New Songs

So, this day has finally come.  The sky has opened up and the grindcore Gods have graced us with their fruits.

Today, the recently incarnated band "Puig Destroyer" has released the remaining 5 songs to their eagerly awaited EP, and my head is throbbing in excitement.

Sure, the sounds can take a little bit of time to get used to, and it certainly isn't for everyone.  But you can't deny how symbolically appropriate it is.  As drummer Riley Breckenridge said in a recent LA Weekly interview:
"He's a freakish prospect that terrorizes opposing pitchers," Breckenridge says. "He's insanely raw and incredibly talented. He's got all of the tools but he doesn't know how to use all of the tools yet. He plays with a level of energy that is kind of reckless. It fits the style of music that we wanted to play."
Yes, it does Riley!  Puig Destroyer embodies Puig the player.  Take a listen below to all 6 songs via twitter @PuigDestroyer.  BTW, you can check out my interview with drummer Riley Breckenridge right here.

Here is the Puig Destroyer website for download at bandcamp.  Also a very limited run of vinyl 7" records will be pressed.  Go here to order.

Blog Kiosk: 7/19/2013 - Dodgers Links - Baby Clayton, Headphones from Kemp and a New 16-Year Old Dodger

Baby Clayton Kershaw!  Pic via twitter @Dodgers.  OMG, the Dodgers need to make available more baby pics of our favorite Dodgers!
    • Eric Stephen at True Blue LA writes, "International signing period: Dodgers sign Venezuelan SS Moises Perez, per report".  He is 16-years old.
    • Here's a 360 degree look at the Vin Scully Bobblehead.  Pic via twitter @Dodgers.
    • Mike Oz at Big League Stew tells us that "Matt Kemp bought $250 headphones for every player on the Dodgers".
    • Ken Gurnick at MLB.com writes, "Dodgers' all-time Top 5 in-season trades: Ramirez deal tops list of notable midseason imports for storied franchise".
    • Eric Becker at Eric's Dodger Blog writes a piece about the irrational (often racist filled) ranting found online about Marc Anthony singing "God Bless America" during the All-Star game.  BTW, Anthony was born in NY, and the song was written by an immigrant, Irving Berlin.  Funny... A man considered America's greatest song writer was himself an immigrant.  Take that, nativist!
    • Roberto at Vin Scully is My Homeboy relays a news story about a pending lawsuit against Yasiel Puig that appears related to his escape from Cuba.
    • What a gimmick!  Via Tom Bartsch at Sports Collectors Digest, Lelands Auctions is offering $1Million to anyone who brings to them the 1919 Black Sox confession documents that mysteriously disappeared from the DA's office before their infamous trial.
“The Black Sox confessions are the Dead Sea Scrolls of baseball,” said Josh Evans, founder and chairman of Lelands.com. “Finding them would close the darkest chapter in baseball history.”

2013 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions Set - Dodgers Cards

Earlier in the week, Upper Deck released their Goodwin Champions set, and unfortunately it is short of Dodger players.  Heck, I had to stretch a bit to find anybody to show, so I included some former players who you wouldn't normally consider Dodgers.  There is one exception, though.  Mark McGwire is in the set, and he is currently our batting coach.

The only player in the set who was a long-time Dodger is Jake Daubert, but I have yet to find an actual pic of this card.  He is #198, and it's is a "Super-Short-Printed" card.

79 Darryl Strawberry                                90 Mark McGwire

      126 Kenny Lofton

UPDATE:  Here is card #198 of former Brooklyn Dodger/Robins Jake Daubert.

The below horizontal variation is extremely limited.  According to checklist one card from the 20 card subset can be found in approximately every 1,400 packs.

      Horizontal Variations

      126 Kenny Lofton

      Autographed Cards

A-KL Kenny Lofton                             A-ME Mark McGwire
