Blog Kiosk: 5/16/2016 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

This guy showed up at Dodger Stadium on both Saturday and Sunday to the delight of players and fans alike.  We first noticed him when Ziggy Marley shared a pic of him signing this fans uniform (link here) on Saturday.  Then, he appeared again on Sunday (link here) with a whole new set of drawings on his face.

  • This Day in Dodgers History: On this day in 1970 a fourteen year old fan named Alan Fish was struck by a Baseball at Dodger Stadium and die four days later.  This marked the first fatality of a fan from a batted ball in a Major League game, and it happened off the bat of Manny Mota.  Tom Hoffarth provides more detail about the incident here.  In 2000 was the infamous fight at Wrigley Field that started when Dodgers catcher Chad Kreuter was hit in the back of the head and had his hat stolen by a unruly fan.  Several players and coached jumped into the stands during the melee.

Blog Kiosk: 12/28/2015 - Dodger Links - Some Odds and Ends

Check out this fantastic action press photograph, found on eBay, of future Cardinals Hall of Famer Frankie Frisch being forced out at third base during a Thursday afternoon game at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.  Making the play for the Dodgers is third-sacker Jim Bucher.  It is from a game played on September 19, 1935.  Unfortunately, the Dodgers would get walloped 9-1 this day by the eventually World Series victors.  BTW, this photo was once a part of the fantastic George Michael Collection (a noted sports broadcaster) of Baseball sliding press photos.

Below are more links to check out:
  • RIP, Dave Henderson.  He died yesterday at the age of 57, via an AP report on FoxSports.  I still vividly remember his crushing home run during the 1986 ALCS against the Angels, and recall being kinda sad for my other 14-year old friends.  Secretly, though, I was overjoyed (since the Dodgers were nowhere near as good that season), and forever considered Henderson to be the greatest clutch hitter of all time (hey, I was 14).  I also remember being more fearful of him than anyone else in that A's lineup during the 1988 World Series.

Blog Kiosk: 11/5/2013 - Dodgers Links - Garvey & Tommy John on HOF Ballot, Goodbye Elian and Kershaw Chosen as Best NL Pitcher by Peers

The photo above is a great 1953 vintage press photo issued by International News Photos showing some Brooklyn Dodgers diving for cover during a Spring Training game at Vero Beach.  Pic found via eBay.  George Shuba, Ben Wade and coach Jake Pitler cover up.  Is that Roy Campanella in his catcher gear?

Thanks to the Topps Ultimate Chase Ticket, Alan Tavelman and his 14-year-old son, Zach, got tickets to every postseason game for their selected team, the Dodgers, after they found one of 10 tickets inside a box of 2013 Topps. The ticket was good for a signed bat — and then a spot in a drawing to win a postseason pass for a team of their choice, which they won.

Welcome to the Blue, Drew Butera!

The Dodgers made a minor trade today that involved a back-up catcher for cash (or a player to be named later).  They picked up Drew Butera, who is the son of former Major League catcher Sal Butera, from the Twins.  He will be sent to AAA- Albuquerque.

This is just a depth move by the Dodgers.  He is essentially the back-up to the back-up.  So, if Tim Federowicz were to go down (or AJ Ellis) then Butera may find himself on the roster.  Also, he is on twitter.  You can follow him here: @drewbutera.

Frankly, there really is nothing to see here.  This is a "just in case" move for a guy who hasn't shown much of a "bat" in the majors.

BTW, I made the above fantasy card of Drew using the 1987 Topps card design and a photo grabbed from Zimbio from press photo day (Elsa/Getty Images North America).

From a Dodgers press release:
The Los Angeles Dodgers today acquired catcher Drew Butera from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Butera, who turns 30 on Aug. 9, has a .182 career batting average with five home runs and 41 RBI in 186 career big league games with the Twins from 2010-13 and has hit .217 with 24 home runs and 169 RBI in 485 games during seven minor league seasons.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder appeared in two games with the Twins during a brief call-up from July 24-28, but has spent the majority of the 2013 campaign with Triple-A Rochester, batting .229 with two homers and 10 RBI in 26 games with the Red Wings.

Butera, who was originally selected by the Mets in the fifth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Central Florida, is the son of former Major League catcher Sal Butera, who played in nine seasons with the Twins (1980-82, 1987), Tigers (1983), Expos (1984-85), Reds (1986-87) and Blue Jays (1988).

The Dodgers now have 40 players on their 40-man roster.
Below are his stats, via Baseball Reference:

--------------------------------------------

In other Dodger news.  The Dodgers send down Elian Herrera and bring back up Scott Van Slyke in an ever evolving game of musical chairs.  Per a Dodgers press release:
The Los Angeles Dodgers today recalled outfielder/first baseman Scott Van Slyke from Triple-A Albuquerque and optioned infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera to Triple-A.

Van Slyke, 27, will be making his third stint with the big league club and has a .241 batting average with six doubles, six homers and 14 RBI in 33 games with the Dodgers this year. Van Slyke appeared in eight games with the Isotopes since he was optioned on July 21, batting .250 (6-for-24) with two doubles, a homer and five RBI, and is batting .355 with 10 homers and 35 RBI in 45 games with Albuquerque this season.

Herrera appeared in just one game during his recall, striking out as a pinch-hitter on Sunday, and has gone 2-for-8 (.250) in four games with the Dodgers this season.

Here are May's Dodger Pride Award Winners - Minor League Players of the Month for May

With Yasiel Puig already in the show, I guess we won't be hearing any more news about his exploits in the Dodgers' minor league farm system.  On the other hand, he did play most of the last month in Chattanooga, so I guess he gets one last hurrah.

Just announced today are the Dodgers Pride Award Winners for May - given to their minor league players of the month.

Per a Dodgers press release:

Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes

Pitcher - RHP Blake Johnson posted a 3-2 record with a 1.96 ERA (8 ER/36.2 IP), striking out 32 batters against eight walks in six May starts. Johnson had quality starts in five out of six games in the month and is currently on a run of five straight quality starts. The 27-year-old was among the Pacific Coast League leaders in ERA (1.96, 5th) and wins (3, T-9th) in May. Johnson was selected by the Dodgers in the second round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft.

Player - IF/OF Elian Herrera posted a .363 (33-for-91) batting average, which tied for eighth-best in the Pacific Coast League during May, with 33 hits, three home runs and 10 RBI in the month. On the season, Herrera has come through consistently in big moments, batting .348 (16-for-46) with a homer and 20 RBI with runners in scoring position. The switch-hitter was signed by the Dodgers as a non-drafted free agent on May 14, 2003.

Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts

Pitcher - LHP Rob Rasmussen posted a 2-1 record with a 1.97 ERA (7 ER/32.0 IP), fanning 29 batters against seven walks in six May games (five starts). The Pasadena native recorded quality starts in four of his five starts in the month and struck out at least five batters in each start, holding the opposition to a .200 batting average. Rasmussen went 13 consecutive innings without surrendering an earned run from May 15-31 and is 3-3 with a 2.42 ERA through 12 games (11 starts) this year. The Dodgers acquired Rasmussen in a trade with the Astros on Dec. 20, 2012 and was originally selected by Houston in the second round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of UCLA.

(pic credit: Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2013)
Player - OF Yasiel Puig posted a .301 batting average with 28 hits, nine doubles, four home runs, 26 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 26 May games to take home the May Dodger Pride Award for Chattanooga. The outfielder ranked among the league's best in RBI (26, T-2nd), stolen bases (11, T-3rd) and doubles (9, T-8th). Puig recorded an RBI in five games in a row from May 25-30, totaling 12 RBI during that stretch. Puig, who was signed as a free agent on June 29, 2012 out of Cuba, was recalled by the Dodgers and made his Major League debut on June 3 and finished his first week in the Majors with a .464 batting average (13-for-28), four home runs and 10 RBI in seven games (including five multi-hit efforts) to earn NL Player of the Week honors.

Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes

Player - LHP Jarret Martin went 3-1 in May with a 2.41 ERA (9 ER/33.2 IP) in six starts. In the month, the 24-year-old collected 37 strikeouts against 16 walks while limiting the opposition to a .236 batting average. Martin was originally selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 18th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft and was acquired in a trade with the Orioles on Dec. 8, 2011.

Player - OF Noel Cuevas batted .336 (34-for-93) in May, driving in 24 runs and clubbing three homers. On the year, the native of Puerto Rico has a .314 batting average, the fifth-best overall mark in the California League, including a .333 (17-for-51) batting average with runners in scoring position. The 21-year-old was selected by the Dodgers in 21st round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

Single-A Great Lakes Loons

Player - RHP Jharel Cotton posted a 3.67 ERA (14 ER/34.1 IP) in six May starts. Cotton limited opposing hitters to a .206 average with 31 strikeouts, while limiting left-handed hitters to a .160 batting average. Cotton was recently named to represent the Loons in the Midwest League All-Star team alongside teammates Carlos Frias and Tyler Ogle before being promoted to Double-A Chattanooga. The right-hander was selected by the Dodgers in the 20th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of East Carolina University.

Player - INF Kevin Taylor posted a .263 (20-for-76) batting average with a homer and seven RBI in 21 May games. On the season, the 21-year-old is batting .321 (9-for-28) with runners in scoring position and .309 (25-for-81) against right-handed pitchers. A native of Portland, Oregon, Taylor was drafted by the Dodgers in the 26th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft from Western Nevada Community College.

Blog Kiosk: 6/3/2013 - Dodgers Links

It will be the second consecutive game in which the Dodgers need to promote a Minor Leaguer as an emergency replacement for an injured starting pitcher. On Sunday, Matt Magill took the loss, filling in for Hyun-Jin Ryu, who has a sore foot.
Seven years ago, Kemp was Puig – the raw kid with talent to burn and lessons to learn. Puig, like Kemp did when he hit the majors at age 21 in 2006, has a hugely bright future. But anyone putting their faith in Puig will almost certainly at some point need a level of patience that many fans have denied Kemp whenever he has struggled, no matter how much he has done for his team.

Baseball has a very long memory. One former player loves to tell the story about holding a grudge for a decade, letting it fester, exacting his vengeance with a strategic elbow to the groin on a takeout slide and walking away from the doubled-over second baseman saying, "That was for 10 years ago."

Welcome Back to the Blue, Scott Van Slyke!

The Dodgers game of musical chairs continue.  Coming off a spectacular April where he was the recipient of the Dodger Pride Award for the month, AAA slugger Scott Van Slyke will take his bat to Los Angeles for another shot at The Show.  Returning to Albuquerque will be Elian Hererra.  Per a Dodger press release:
The Los Angeles Dodgers today selected the contract of outfielder/first baseman Scott Van Slyke (#33) from Triple-A Albuquerque and optioned infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Van Slyke, 26, was leading the Triple-A Pacific Coast League with a .397 batting average, nine homers (T-1st), 32 runs scored (T-1st), a .503 on-base percentage and a .733 slugging percentage in 34 games with the Isotopes. He was also tied for second in the league with 30 RBI. Van Slyke appeared in 27 games with the Dodgers last year, batting .167 (9-for-54) with two homers and seven RBI in his only MLB experience.

Herrera made just one appearance after being recalled on Tuesday, starting Wednesday’s game against the D-backs in left field and going 1-for-3 at the plate.
Last year, Van Slyke made his debut in Dodger Blue, but failed to impress.  Although, he did slug a couple of homers, and recorded his very first hit against the SF Giants.  So there's that.

I thought it would be fun to share a video I found of Scott Van Slyke in the Dodgers clubhouse after his first Major League hit as he faces a little bit of hazing.  Check it out below.

2012 Panini Prizm Baseball - All the Dodgers' Cards

Panini just released their newest Baseball card set earlier this week and it's 2012 Prizm Baseball.  Why they continue to use the 2012 date I do not know - it's confusing... and stupid.  Anyway, this set is fulled with shiny chrome cards.  They also lack MLB team logo's, so they look a little strange.  Panini was shut out of a MLB license, but they did get a license from the Players Association.  Still, it's a little uncomfortable looking at a card and not seeing the Dodgers logo where it should be.

Below are all of the Dodgers' players you can find in the set, starting with the base set.  Panini even includes one old-timer, Fernando Valenzuela.

#3 Matt Kemp                                    #15 Hanley Ramirez

#29 Clayton Kershaw                          #39 Adrian Gonzalez

#82 Zack Greinke                               #110 Andre Ethier

#113 Carl Crawford                            #128 Fernando Valenzuela

#183 Elian Herrera RC
Elite Extra Edition Autograph Cards
 #EEECS Corey Seager
Team MVP Cards
#MVP14 Matt Kemp
Top Prospects Cards
#TP6 Zach Lee

There is also an autographed version of this card.  Unfortunately, a photo of it is not available at this time.

Paco and Sellers Make the Team!

After last nights game, the Dodgers made some moves to drop the official roster down closer to 25 players.  Some more decisions need to be made; including a last-minute trade involving Harang or Capuano, and some likely Disabled List moves.  First, lets take a brief look at last nights cuts.  Via a couple of tweets from @Dodgers PR:
(twitter link)
(twitter link)

(photo credit: Paco: Jon SooHoo/2013 LA Dodgers)
We find out that Stephen Fife, Elian Herrera, Alfredo Amezaga, Peyer Moylan, Matt Wallach, Josh Wall, Alex Castellanos and Kevin Gregg have all been either optioned or reassigned.  Surprisingly, veteran reliever Kevin Gregg is included.  He has been recently touted as in contention for the final relief spot (via Eric Stephen at True Blue LA).  Also, Alex Castellanos was favored by many to capture an outfield reserve spot.

(photo credit: Sellers & Uribe: Jon SooHoo/2013 LA Dodgers)
What we find out by these moves is that Justin Sellers has won a spot in the infield, and will probably be our Opening Day shortstop.  Obviously, with Hanley Ramirez going to the DL the team has opted to focus on defense while we wait for the healing to end.  Of special note, recent 2012 draftee Paco Rodriguez likely earns a bullpen position as our 3rd left-handed reliever in the pen (assuming Capuano stays a Dodger).   He wowed the team in his 11 Major League appearances during his first year of professional play last year, and continued to impress the Dodgers staff with a great Spring.

At this point, assuming several upcoming Disabled List announcements, it looks like our 25 man roster for Opening Day will look like this:
Catchers (2):
  • A.J. Ellis, Tim Federowicz
Infielders (7):
  • Adrian Gonzalez, Mark Ellis, Justin Sellers, Luis Cruz, Skip Schumaker, Juan Uribe, Nick Punto
Outfielders (4):
  • Carl Crawford, Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, Jerry Hairston Jr.
Starting pitchers (4):
  • Clayton Kershaw, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Josh Beckett, Zack Greinke
Relief Pitchers (8):
  • Brandon League, Kenley Jansen, Ronald Belisario, J.P. Howell, Matt Guerrier, Paco Rodriguez, Chris Capuano, Aaron Harang
Disabled List (4):
  • Scott Elbert*, Hanley Ramirez*, Chad Billingsley*, Ted Lilly*

Take a Look Back at 2012's Walk-Off Dodger Victories

(pic via Jon SooHoo/ LA Dodgers 2012)

Other than the fact that the Dodgers didn't make the playoffs, they had an otherwise remarkable season in 2012.  They finally kicked to the curb an owner the city grew to loath, we made inroads towards revitalizing a sinking farm system, and made some giant trades and free agency pick-ups that keep fans hopeful of a better tomorrow.  To add to the good feelings felt in Los Angeles, they even rewarded faithful fans with numerous walk-off victories that kept us riveted.

From my count, the Dodgers recorded 10 walk-off hits and 2 walk-off walks in 2012.  BTW, that tally is far from a record- the Yankees had 17 walk-off wins in 1943.

In commemoration and celebration of an incredible year in Dodger walk-offs, I thought it would be fun to take another look at the 12 nail-biting victories.  See videos of each one below.  It is listed from most recent to oldest.  Also of special note, AJ Ellis was the king of the walk-offs in 2012.  He was responsible for 3 walk-off victories.

10/1/12: Elian Herrera lines a pitch off Marco Scutaro's glove and into center field for a single to score the game-winning run in the ninth.

2012 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects Baseball- Dodgers Cards

The release of new Baseball card sets never stops.  Out this week is the 2012 Bowman Draft Picks and Prospects Baseball cards, and as the title of the set suggest it focuses primarily on the up-and-comers.  Unfortunately, only a handful of Dodgers are in the set- which shows you how depleted our farm system really is right now.  Check them all out below.

The Elian Herrera card below is a Red Ice parallel card that is numbered to just 25 copies.  It is a part of the base Rookie Cards set.

#51 Elian Herrera

The only Dodger represented in the Draft Picks Autographed insert set is recent draftee Corey Seager.

#BCA-CS Corey Seager

As a part of the Draft Picks base set is the card of Jesmuel Valentin.  He is the only Dodger represented here.

#BDPP11 Jesmuel Valentin

One current Dodger is in the set as a part of the Dual Top Ten Picks insert card set.  It is of Clayton Kershaw, and he is paired with Padres pitching prospect Max Fried.  There is a also a dual signed card, but I have yet to see one.

2012 Bowman Chrome Baseball Cards- Dodgers Base Cards

Another week, another new Baseball card set.

I'm not sure what the purpose of this new set is.  It's like deja vu.

Officially released yesterday, Topps unveiled their 2012 Bowman Chrome card set.  It is very similar to their normal Bowman set they released in May of this year.  Go here to see the base cards from the normal 2012 Bowman set, here.

In fact, for the base cards it uses the exact same checklist (except Loney is not included in this new set) and photographs (except the Kershaw appears to be cropped in a little closer).  Significant differences include a couple of new rookies (Elian Herrera and O'Koyea Dickson) and a new numbering system for the cards.

Check out the Dodgers base cards to the set below.  I'll have the handful of Dodgers inserts posted up later on.

45 Clayton Kershaw

97 Matt Kemp

Below is the Dee Gordon card, but as you can see it is a green parallel that can only be found in retail packs.  As always, there are numerous parallel versions of each base card in the set.

123 Dee Gordon

177 Elian Herrera RC

186 Ted Lilly

Below is the only Dodgers Bowman Chrome Prospect card in the set (at least I didn't recognize any of the other names in the published checklist).  Similar to the Dee Gordon card above, this Dickson rookie card is a parallel card.  It is a orange border version and is numbered to #25.
