Blog Kiosk: 8/15/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

The other day we were introduced, via a tweet from the Del Mar Racetrack, to a thoroughbred racehorse named "Puig." The four-legged speedster hit the track for the first time on Sunday in an maiden race (a race for horses who have not yet won a race) at a bit over 32-1 odds, and came in at a very respectable second place. You can watch the contest here.

Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1926 a daffy play happened to the daffiest of Brooklyn ballplayers. Outfielder Babe Herman, in the seventh inning and the bases loaded, hit a double off the right field wall and attempted to stretch it to a triple. Unbeknownst to him, two runners ahead of him failed to advance beyond third base. So, he cruised into third while two other Dodgers were standing there. Per the rules, the lead runner is entitled to the base, so Herman and the man who was on first (Chick Fewster) were called out. So, Herman doubled into a double play.
  • Video: RC Quakes Postgame Show -- They speak with Andre Ethier, who is on rehab assignment and went 2-for-3. (video link)
  • Per Ron Cervenka at Think Blue LA; "Ethier pleased with second rehab game."
“I think that’s the biggest thing right now is just getting the timing back,” Ethier said. “It’s always easier said than done, but if you can just hold on to that feeling. I do a lot of film work with my video – looking at stuff from the past – and try to pick up some keys and ques, but each year is different so you just go out there seeing live pitching, seeing game situations, repricating situations out there, how they’re going to pitch to you and just playing the game and going through it. There’s not a certain number. Everyone wants to know ‘what’s the number? Is it twenty, twenty-five, thirty, fifty at-bats?’ No, it’s just when you feel good you feel good."
"There was a little kind of lull a couple of weeks ago when he wasn't getting hits," Roberts said. "Which I think was the only lull he's had the entire season. His at-bat quality has been consistent, and it always is. He's the glue to our ballclub."
“The season is the focus,” Roberts said. “We don’t want anything to detract from our focus.”
Roberts said he hopes his Dodgers tenure extends beyond his current contract.
“This is my dream job,” he said.
  • Per William Boor at MLB.com; "Monday's best: Verdugo's hot streak continues."
