2015 Elite Extra Edition Baseball - The Dodgers Insert Cards

Following up on last weeks post featuring the Dodgers base cards found in Panini's 2015 Elite Extra Edition Baseball card set, I now share pics of many of the inserts that are available.  Unfortunately, I don't have photos of everything.  Please note that there are many parallels; including autographed versions of just about every card available.

On Saturday Yasiel Puig joined Hall of Famer Andre Dawson for a Miracle League of Miami Dade game in benefit of children and adults with physical or mental disabilities.  They spent the afternoon playing the game we love, and surely had the time of their lives.  Go here for information about this organization.  Photo above via @Dodgers on twitter.

  • Here is something I didn't know.  Ron Cervenka at Think Blue LA provides some background on the photograph used for Orel Hershiser's 1994 Stadium Club Baseball card; ‘In Sod We Trust’.
As the team was preparing to head out on another road trip that would take them to Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh and Busch Stadium in St. Louis – both of which had artificial turf – Dodgers outfielder Cory Snyder suggested that they buy some sod when they arrived at these ballparks to remind them of the success they enjoyed on the real turf at Dodger Stadium. Dodgers 1988 World Series hero Orel Hershiser thought that this was a great idea and when the team arrived in Pittsburgh, he asked their visiting clubhouse attendant to run out and buy several half-yard strips of sod.

  • Via Alex Speier at the Boston Globe, "An insider’s view of the rise of Jeff Bagwell and Mike Piazza."  Here are some thoughts from a fellow minor leaguer, turned scout, who witnessed their growth first hand in the minors:
On Piazza:  “I do remember that for the at-bats he had in the Florida State League in 1990, he had a lot of home runs. No one hits home runs there. … We watched him taking [batting practice] in Vero Beach and he just hit bombs,” said Fagnant, who at one point that year swapped a Winter Haven hat for Piazza’s Vero Beach hat. “Piazza hit balls that were awe-inspiring. As a 20-something-year-old in the minors, he hit balls where nobody else did. It was power that you knew was different than everyone.”
  • This is interesting.  Via Bob Lemke, "Dodgers' home field was anathema to Spahn."
According to that article, between the second game of the Aug. 21, 1948 double header and June 28, 1963, Spahn never won a game against the Brooklyn/L.A. Dodgers; not in Ebbets Field, not in the L.A. Memorial Coliseum and not in the Dodgers' new stadium in Chavez ravine.
