2020 Panini Select Baseball -- All the Dodger Inserts

Here is a look at all of the Dodger inserts cards available in packs of Panini's 2020 Select Baseball brand. Go here for a complete checklist.

There are a ton of prospects here; including five Gavin lux cards -- two of which are autographed. Other rising stars include Tony Gonsolin, Dustin May and Keibert Ruiz. There is also another Mookie Betts cards, but it once again shows him wearing Boston Red Sox gear.

A hopeful and elated Charley Dressen is seen above in a 1953 AP press photo, from October 3, 1953 (eBay auction link). Per a descriptor on the reverse:

Two's a magic number for manager Charley Dressen of the Brooklyn Dodgers who flashed a happy smile after his club drew even with the New York Yankees by winning the fourth game of the World Series, 7-3. Those two fingers he is holding up could be a victory sign or the number of games he thinks the series will have to go to end in his favor.

Unfortunately, Dressen's smile would turn upside down. The Dodgers lose the next two games and the '53 series. Below are more links to check out:

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1888 fan favorite Adonis Terry pitched his second career no-hitter for Brooklyn Bridegrooms at Washington Park, 4-0. It was against the Louisville Colonels -- a club that would eventually fold following the 1899 season. BTW, I just ran into a website dedicated to Adonis Terry. Check it out here. In 2015 the Dodgers traded beloved Juan Uribe, and Chris Withrow to the Braves for Alberto Callaspo, Juan Jaime, Eric Stults and Ian Thomas. Uribe spent over 4 season with Los Angeles -- slashing .260/.306/.381/.687 with 28 homeruns, 155 RBI and an overall WAR of 6.8.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1919 Brooklynites attend the very first major league game played on a Sunday due to a new law passed by the NY Legislature called the "Sunday Baseball Bill." The Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field, 6-2. In 1966 Willie Mays hits his 512nd career home run off of Dodgers hurler Claude Osteen at Candlestick Park. The homer breaks the NL All-Time home run mark held by Mel Ott. In 1976 it is declared Rick Monday Day in Illinois. The then Cubs outfielder is presented with the flag he saved from an on-field burning attempt at Dodger Stadium. In 2009 the Dodgers win their 11th straight game to start the season -- breaking a NL record. In 2012 the Dodgers signed free agent outfield Bobby Abreu to a one-year $9 million contract.

Here is a vintage 1950 photograph taken during the filming of The Jackie Robinson Story featuring Jackie with his military baseball team -- the 761st Black Panther Tank Battalion, based at Fort Hood, Texas. This photo happens to have been signed by Robinson. It is currently available on auction through Heartland (link here). Jackie Robinson is standing on the top row, on the far left.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1968 the Dodgers traded for left-hander Hank Aguirre from the Tigers for a player to be named later -- minor leaguer Fred Moulder. He played one season in Blue, and is best known for being the worst hitter in Major League history -- slashing .085/.117/.108/.225 and striking out an astounding 61% of the time through a 16-year Major League career. In 1974 the Dodgers traded for soon-to-be fan favorite Pedro Guerrero from the Indians in exchange for pitcher Bruce Ellingsen. In 2004 the Dodgers traded Franklin Gutierrez and Andrew Brown to the Indians for outfielder Milton Bradley.

2020 Donruss Baseball -- All the Dodgers Cards

Last week saw the release of Panini's flagship Baseball card brand, 2020 Donruss Baseball, and I've got pics of most of the Dodger cards to share with you. Go here for a complete checklist.

The featured Dodgers' Diamond King is MVP Cody Bellinger. Additionally, of the 30 Rated Rookies in the base set three of them are Dodger players -- Dustin May, Gavin Lux and Tony Gonsolin. This is unusual since historically every team is typically given one Rated Rookie in the set. Notably, Hyun-Jin Ryu has one Dodger card in the set -- as part of the Dominators insert set.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1912 Charles Ebbets breaks ground on his new ballpark in the Pigtown section of Brooklyn. It was originally going to be called Washington Park, but will be renamed Ebbets Field. In 1984 Pee Wee Reese is elected into the Hall of Fame by the Special Veterans Committee. In 2009 the Dodgers re-signed outfielder Manny Ramirez to a two-year $45 million contract.

Sandy got a ticket. This is hilarious. Per a descriptor on the reverse (eBay auction link):

Sand Koufax lifts a parking ticket from the windshield of the car which was given him for being outstanding player in recent World Series. Sandy appeared at a downtown restaurant in New York Tuesday to get his prize and the car was driven up on the sidewalk for the benefit of photographers. When Sandy came out he found a decoration -- which cost $15 -- on his windshield. (10/9/1963)

2019 Flawless Baseball - All the Dodger Cards

A few weeks back Panini America released their Flawless Baseball card brand, and I've gathered up a bunch of Dodger cards to share here. As you may know, this is Panini's hieh-end Baseball card set -- costing $1,250 for one box of ten cards. Each box consist of seven autographs, two relic cards and a diamond insert card. Go here for a complete checklist.

It is notable that Panini has issued another Vin Scully autographed card. It is the third Vin Scully card issued by Panini this year - the others coming from their Diamond Kings and National treasures brands. Two examples of this card have recently sold for $380 to $450.

2019 Topps On-Demand Set #21 -- Reflection Baseball -- All the Dodger Cards

Here's a look at another On-Demand set that recently hit the market. It is called Reflection Baseball, and it was billed as a set, "built by fans and collectors for fans and collectors." Apparently, Topps had polled collectors and this set is the result. Go here to check out a complete checklist.

There are 50 cards in the base set and two Dodgers are represented there -- Cody Bellinger and Sandy Koufax.

Blog Kiosk: 12/2/2019 - Dodgers Links - New Robinson/Shuba Statue to be Created

Mark this on your calendar. April 2021 will mark the 75th anniversary of the historic 1946 handshake between George Shuba and Jackie Robinson, and to honor it Youngstown, Ohio will unveil a statue to celebrate. Dubbed "the handshake of the century", they are aiming to raise $400,000 to complete the 7 foot statue. Go here to help out. Per a press release:

"A handshake at home plate by players of different races is no big deal in America today, but in 1946 it was a historic moment," said Herb Washington, a local businessman and one of the co-chairs of the committee. "We want to memorialize that moment in a way that inspires people to relate more respectfully to those of other races. We need more Americans to follow the examples of Jackie Robinson and George Shuba."

"In our book, George is quoted as saying he didn't think at the time that shaking a black player's hand was a big deal," said Greg Gulas, a retired Youngstown State University sports information director and another committee co-chair. "He had played with black and white guys at Chaney High School and in sandlot games in Youngstown for years. He shook Jackie's hand because he had just hit a three-run homer. George was proud to be Jackie's teammate for the Royals and the Dodgers, not because Jackie was black but because he was an incredible baseball player."

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1971 the Dodgers trade Doyle Alexander, Bob O'Brien, Sergio Robles and Royle Stillman to the Orioles for pitcher Pete Richert and soon to be Hall of Famer Frank Robinson. Then, the Dodgers trade future MVP winner Dick Allen to the White Sox for Steve Huntz and pitcher Tommy John. In 1981 Fernando Valenzuela is named the NL Rookie of the Year - the third consecutive year a Dodger has won this award. In 2008 Hall of Fame Dodger skipper Tommy Lasorda is honored in a special ceremony by the Emperor of Japan with the Order of the Rising Sun medal for his contributions to the development of Japanese baseball. In 2011 the Dodgers signed free agent starter Chris Capuano to a two-year $9 million contract. He would go 16-19 with an 3.91 ERA, 3.81 FIP and 7.2 K's per nine innings.

• This Day in Baseball History: In 1979 the Dodgers signed free agent starting pitcher David Goltz to a six-year $3MM contract. The former eight-year Twins veteran went 9-19 with a 4.25 ERA in three season with the team before being release in 1982. In 2016 Corey Seager is named the unanimous winner of the National League Rookie of the Year award.

Los Angeles Dodgers star southpaw pitcher Sandy Koufax hoist a champagne toast in dressing room here 10/6, after the Dodgers won the 4th World Series game in a row to give them the title. The Dodgers handed New York its first 4-game shutout in 28 trips to the classic.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1974 Steve Garvey was named the National League MVP -- receiving 13 of 22 first-place votes. Lou Brock was the runner-up. In 2003 Eric Gagne becomes the ninth reliever to be named a Cy Young winner. He recorded 55 consecutive saves this season. In 2014 Clayton Kershaw becomes the first pitcher to win the National League MVP award since Bob Gibson of the Cardinals in 1968. He received 18 of 30 first place votes.

2019 Topps Triple Threads - All the Dodger Insert Cards

Now that you've seen the 2019 Topps Triple Threads Dodgers' base cards, here's a look at most of the inserts that are available.

As always, the fun thing about this brand are the unusual, and often obtuse, phrases Topps creates with their triple relic cards. For instance, I'm not quite sure what they mean by the phrase "189 ABS, 20 HRS" for the Cody Bellinger card seen directly below. If you have some insight please pass it along. There is also a Joc Pederson autographed relic card that says, "Multi HR, Lid Lifter". As you may, know a Lid Lifter is a sports euphemism for the first game played. So, the Pederson card makes note of his two homer day during their 2019 Opening Day game against the Diamondbacks. BTW, there's another Pederson card that says, "Happy Birthday" -- obviously referencing another of his multi-homer days -- this time against the the Brewers on his birthday, April 21, 2019.

2019 Topps Update Series - All the Dodger Insert Cards

Now that you've seen the Dodgers' base cards found in Topps flagship Update brand, check out many of the various Dodger insert cards that are available below. First, I thought I would begin with the two Dodger players that can be found in the 'Silver Pack 1984 Chrome Promo' packs -- Walker Buehler and catcher Will Smith. As you know, you can receive a free promo pack from participating retailers (hobby shops) for every box of cards purchased. Go here for a checklist.

As for the rest of the cards, there is plenty to chase after. Five Dodgers are available in the various All-Star themed sets, and there's a fantastic autographed Adrian Beltre I would be willing to fight you for.

2019 Topps Archives Signature Series Retired Player Edition - The Dodger Cards

Topps released their 'Archives Signature Series Retired Player Edition' cards a couple of weeks ago, but I am only now able to share some pics of the Dodger cards found in boxes. The checklist of available players is quite extensive, as it includes a bunch of Dodgers'. In fact, I count at least 18 former players within the 93 player set (go here for a complete checklist). So far, I've found cards for only 11 of those ballplayers, but suspect more are available. See those cards below. I will updated this post from time to time, as more cards become unveiled.

BTW, this brand consist of all-autographed Topps cards from past Topps products. So, you can find cards going as far back as 1951 to this season -- all having been hard-signed. A single box of one card will cost you about $40.

2019 Futera Unique Onyx Prospects & Legends Baseball -- The Dodger Cards

Earlier this month Onyx and a company named Futura (who is totally new to me) released a card collaboration non-licensed Baseball card set that features both prospects and some living legends -- called 2019 Futera Unique Onyx Prospects & Legends Baseball. As is typical, there are no team logos anywhere. Go here for a complete checklist.

Only three Dodgers are available -- Gavin Lux, Keibert Ruiz and Mike Piazza. Unfortunately, not all of the individual cards have been revealed. The product is limited to only 75 cases (900 boxes or 3,600 packs). Nevertheless, I've got pics of some of the Dodger cards that are available.

It is notable that we see the very first officially licensed cards of prospects Robinson Ortiz and Edwin Uceta. MLB Pipeling ranks Ortiz as the Dodgers 25th best prospect, while Edwin Uceta is ranked at 21.

A couple weeks back Topps released their premium all-autograph brand, Luminaries, to the collecting public. For the price of about $150 you are guaranteed one autographed card. This year the set pays homage to the 1958, 1975 and 1993 Baseball flagship card designs. Additionally, there are autographed Fan-Favorite cards of Koufax, Eric Gagne and Steve Sax available.
