Seven in-a-row, Baby!

Last night Tony Gonsolin not only extended his scoreless innings streak (14.2), he also helped the Dodgers win their seventh consecutive game. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“I think I’m just feeling a lot more comfortable up here,” Gonsolin said. “I’m trying to go out there and take advantage of every opportunity that I get.”

  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1983 the Dodgers traded for Rangers starting pitcher Rick Honeycutt. As you know, he would go on to have a long career with the franchise. In 1990 Jose Offerman became the first Dodger in franchise history to hit a home run in his very first Major League plate appearance. In 2008 the Dodgers traded for Greg Maddux (for a second time) to help the team during their playoff run. In 2015 the Dodgers traded for "DAD" Chase Utley from the Phillies in exchange for John Richy and Darnell SweeneyIn 2017 the Dodgers received veteran outfielder Curtis Granderson from the Mets for pitcher Jacob Rhame. He would slash just .161/.288/.366/.654 in 36 games for the Dodgers.

2020 Topps Now - Kershaw's First Start of 2020 #46 & Mookie's Card from Saturday #38

Clayton Kershaw was outstanding during his 2020 debut, and for his efforts garnered a 2020 Topps Now card to celebrate the day. As you know, he was sidelined during his planned Opening Day start a couple of weeks ago, so seeing him on the mound was great to watch. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
“I’ve done a lot of different things,” Kershaw said. “Gotten a lot of help from the training staff, strengthening and conditioning staff, working out, doing different things arm care-wise. There’s a lot of things, just threw everything at it and see what came out. I think the biggest thing is being healthy and feeling really good and moving well and just thankful for the arm feeling so good as it did today.”

It was good to see Kershaw out there, and even better that he did well. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“I think there’s a lot of things involved,” Kershaw said. “First time pitching in eight, nine months of a game that actually mattered. There’s some relief, some thankfulness for sure. Just grateful to be back out there again.”
he went 5.2 scoreless innings, with six strikeouts and no walks to win in his first outing of the season.

2020 Donruss Optic Baseball - All the Dodger Cards

Last week saw the release of Panini America's 2020 Optic Baseball card brand, and now I've got pics of most of the Dodger cards to share with you. Check them all out below. Go here for a complete checklist.

Hilariously, Mookie Betts has an insert card here called "Illusions" -- as if him being a Dodger might have been an illusion, if not for the 2020 season and his signing of the recent longterm contact.

Blog Kiosk: 7/8/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

I've been absolutely swamped lately, so I apologize for the lack of recent post.

Check out the always cheery Joc Pederson showing his love for the game, via a tweet from the Dodgers.

We're so close to watching Baseball -- I can almost taste it. In fact, the Dodgers are holding an intrasquad game this afternoon, at 6:40 PM, that will be streamed live on the Dodgers’ Twitter and Facebook with commentary from Alanna Rizzo and Nomar Garciaparra. It’s expected to last 3 innings.

Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1901 the Brooklyn Superbas defeat the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-5, as a result of a questionable call by the umpire. This act infuriates Cardinals fans, to the point of rushing umpire Hank O'Day and giving him a split lip. He has to be rescued by the police. In 1907 Cubs manager Frank Chance, after being pelted with pop bottles, hurls a bottle back at the crowd that cut's a boy's leg. This resulted in a mob that forces Chance to leave the park in an armored car witha police escort after the Cubs defeat the Dodgers, 5-0 (boxscore). In 1949 Giants infielder Hank Thompson faced Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe at the plate -- marking the first time a black batter hit against a black pitcher in Major League history (boxscore). Thompson would hit a pop fly to third in his first at-bat, and go 0-for-2 with a walk overall In 1980 the All-Star Game is played at Dodger Stadium. The National League wins, 4-2 (boxscore), for the ninth consecutive time.

2020 Bowman Baseball -- All the Dodger Base Cards

After a little delay Topps 2020 Bowman Baseball brand is now heading out to collectors. Unfortunately, not everyone who ordered in advance will get their cards right away -- the recent pandemic has caused some delays. That said, plenty of cards are already showing up on eBay, so I've been able to gather up pics of all the Dodger base cards to share here with you. Check them all out below. Go here for a complete checklist.

BTW, our very own Gavin Lux, along with Blue Jays star Bo Bichette, grace the cover of all the boxes. Check out what the blaster box looks like on the right.

Blog Kiosk: 5/21/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

Here's a great photo of two old Brooklyn Dodgers -- Duke Snider and announcer Red Barber -- just prior to their appearance on ABC's Good Morning America on August 1, 1980 (eBay auction link). Per the descriptor on the reverse:
New York: Duke of Brooklyn (and Los Angeles), Edwin Donald Snider (right), who will be inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame August 3, reminisces with his old buddy, former Dodger announcer Red Barber, as they appear August 1 on ABC-TV's Good Morning America. Snider credited much of his success to teammate Pee Wee Reese and owner Branch Rickey. Barber was honored by the Hall of Fame in 1978.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1892 Brooklyn Bridgerooms/Dodgers second baseman George "Hub" Collins died unexpectedly of typoid fever. He had just fallen ill a week before. The 28-year old was considered a star, with many believing he was destined to be the greatest second baseman in Brooklyn history. In 1945 Leo Durocher (as a ballplayer) is officially released, so that he could concentrate all of his efforts on managing the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1952 the Dodgers scored a Major League record 15 runs in the first inning to handily defeat the Reds at Ebbets Field, 19-1. At one point in the first inning 19 consecutive Dodgers' reached base. Also, Pee Wee Reese got on base in each of his three at-bats during the first inning -- with a single, two walks, two runs scored and an RBI. In 2000 MLB has its very first six grand slam day - Shawn Green & Adrian Beltre (Dodgers); Garret Anderson (Angels), J.T. Snow (Giants), Brian Hunter (Phillies) and Jason Giambi (A's).

Here's a fantastic AP press photo featuring Pistol Pete's follow-through at the plate -- dated 9/20/1941 (eBay auction link). Per the descriptor on the reverse:
Brooklyn, NY -- Pete Reiser, hard-hitting young center-fielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers, who will be in there swinging for his team during World Series play, if they win the National League flag.
The Leo Durocher managed Dodgers did win the pennant (with a 100-54 record), but lost to the Bronx Bombers in October. Below are more links to checkout:

2020 Topps Inception - The Dodgers Base Cards

Thank goodness new Baseball card sets are still finding their way into collectors arms. Without them, I think some folks would go a little crazy -- especially given how wild things have been.

Today is the official release date of Topps 2020 Inception Baseball card brand, and I've got pics of the six Dodger base cards found within packs. Check them all out below. Go here for a complete checklist.

This is one of the more colorful sets available. The player portraits have a look of a painting, with splashes of abstract color like a Pollock or Kandinsky in the background. A total of six different color backgrounds are available -- green, purple, magenta, red, orange and blue. A box will include one pack of seven cards, and it will cost you about $60 to $70 per box. You are guaranteed one autographed card per pack.
