Blog Kiosk: 8/12/2019 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Here's a fun fact: If not for Hyun-Jin Ryu's terrible June 28th start in Colorado, he would currently be sporting an 1.04 ERA. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
“It’s an absolute display of the art of pitching,” Turner said of Ryu’s latest masterpiece. “He can pitch to all four quadrants, his command has been great all year. Vintage Ryu. Changing speeds, keeping guys off-balance. He’s like Houdini when he gets in trouble; he finds a way out of it.”
...
“It’s definitely unbelievable,” Ryu said of his ERA. “Like I’ve said many times, I don’t think this is all because of myself. There are many people around me, especially my teammates, that have helped me reach that number. My goal is to do what I do and finish the season strong.”
Ryu pitched sevens innings of scoreless ball to win the game -- recording four strikeouts, one walk and allowing only five hits.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1984 both Don Drysdale and Pee Wee Reese are inducted in into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Other inductees include Harmon Killebrew, Rick Ferrell and Luis AparicioIn 1995 the Dodgers defeated the Pirates, 11-10, due to an obscure baseball rule. In the 11th inning with men on 2nd and 3rd, Dodger pinch-hitter Mitch Webster swings at a pitch in the dirt. Pittsburgh catcher Angelo Encarnacion casually picked up the ball using his mask. This is a violation of the rules. A fielder may not use his mask to touch a thrown ball. Tommy Lasorda appealed to the umpires and they agreed that the runners shall advance two bases -- driving in the walk-off winning run. Encarnacion is given an error.

  • ICYMI: Per Jeff Todd at MLB Trade Rumors -- "Dodgers Acquire Jose Lobaton From Mariners." This is all because high-flying catching prospect Keibert Ruiz was recently injured.
Lobaton, 34, had been playing with the top Seattle affiliate on a minors deal. That’s why he was able to be traded after the July 31st trade deadline.
It’s doubtful that the Dodgers anticipate utilizing Lobaton at the MLB level. He hasn’t been a passable offensive performer in the majors since 2016. In parts of nine seasons in the majors, the switch-hitter carries a .215/.293/.319 slash.
6. INF Gavin Lux: The Dodgers don't just see Lux as a longtime contributor for their franchise; they see him as an instant leader in their clubhouse, even though he's a 21-year-old who has yet to play his first major league game. But they do not see him as an option for this year's postseason run, even though his Triple-A slash line -- .456/.535/.846 in 159 plate appearances -- is absurd.

What is not disputed is what came next: the baseballs.
“They came raining down from the upper deck,” Mabry recalls. “And the next thing to come was the bottle of Jack [Daniels] that hit me.”
Says Davidson: “I think I remember reading they gave out 35,000 baseballs that day. And I think pretty much all of them were on the field! I don’t think too many fans brought them home.”
...
Says (Fred) Claire: “I’ve seen many disputes, many delays, many things taking place on the field. But all at once, in a close ballgame, when you’re fighting for the pennant and first place, you’ve lost because an umpire made a ruling. I didn’t like it then, I don’t like it now, and I won’t like it 30 years from now.”
