• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1956 Dodgers hurler Carl Erskine throws his second career no-hitter -- becoming the eighth Dodger to do so in their history. He blanked the New York Giants, 3-0 (boxscore), at Ebbets Field. In 1979 Saturday Night Live Weekend Update anchorman Bill Murray announced that lovable All-Star second baseman Chico Escuela (played by Garrett Morris) would quit baseball after Steve Garvey crushed a ball that hit Escuela in the crotch -- rendered him irreversibly infertile. In 2004 Alex Cora had his famous 18 pitch at-bat (including 14 consecutive fouls balls) at Dodger Stadium against Matt Clement of the Cubs that culminated in an unbelievable two-run home run.  You can watch this at-bat here. In 2015 Giancarlo Stanton owned Dodgers pitcher Mike Bolsinger when he become only the fourth player to hit a home run out of Dodger Stadium. Watch it here. Stanton's homer would prove to be the only run the Marlins would score (boxscore).

Blog Kiosk: 10/19/2016 - Dodgers Links - Kershaw Saves, a Dodger Mural, Urias and Rich Hill

Rich Hill and his curve ball dominated the Cubs yesterday evening.  Via Jon Weisman at Dodger Insider:

“I think it’s one of those things that if you have a pitch that’s better than your other pitches, you throw it more, and percentage-wise it should work out in your favor,” Hill said. “I’m not going to sit here and say it’s not a major part of my game.”

The 36-year-old added that tonight’s victory was the “biggest game of my career,” but that you can’t think like that while it’s happening.

“It’s all about staying in the moment and executing when you’re in that moment, and that’s all you can think about,” Hill said. “All you can control is that pitch. In the second inning, walk a few guys — it’s over with, can’t control it — and you move on. You execute the next pitch, and you execute the pitch after that. And you continue to execute until the ball gets taken out of your hand.”

Holy Moly!  I knew Hill's numbers with the A's were strong, but I really had no idea that this journeyman who'd been out of the game (playing independent Baseball just a year or two ago) was the late-blooming ace that he showed last night.  What a godsend, eh?

And, let's give it up for the resurgent Dodgers offense.  Both Yasmani Grandal and Justin Turner hit homers, while Yasiel Puig and Corey Seager finally broke out of their slumps to record five singles, collectively (two for Puig and three for Seager).

• This Day in Dodgers History:  In 1981 Rick Monday made history by hitting a dramatic solo home run in the eighth inning of Game 5 of the NLCS to propel the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Expos.  Go here to watch a highlight of it.  He hit a 3-1 fastball against Steve Rogers.  BTW, Fernando Valenzuela allowed just three hits and one run in 8 2/3 inning.  The win sent the team to the World Series against the Yankees.

• Check out From the Ravine's Extra Innings podcast as they discuss the potential lineups for both the Dodgers and Angels.
• Topps recently unveiled a preview uncut sheet of Baseball cards on twitter that includes a sneak peak at some cards for Matt Kemp, Sandy Koufax and Jackie Robinson.  See the pic below.  I believe these cards are a part of an insert set for their upcoming flagship Baseball card set.

• An old friend report:  Delwyn Young is drawing interest from MLB teams, via Chris Cotillo at CLNS Radio.com.  He had double hernia surgery in June.
• Eric Stephen at True Blue LA is doing yeoman's work.  He is writing individual biographies of every member of the 1988 Dodgers.  He started off with Kirk Gibson yesterday, and Tim Belcher today.  I wonder if he'll include former Dodgers GM Fred Claire in his biographies.  I find his formation of that team to be one of the more interesting stories of that championship club.
• In this recent edition of putting the cart before the horse:  Bae Joong-Hyun of the Korean Joongang Daily wonders if the Rookie of the Year award is possible for Ryu.

• Jon Weisman at Dodger Thoughts speculates that Rubby De La Rosa might be pitching in LA before the season is done.
• Josh Suchon shares his interview with former Dodger Tim Belcher.
• Jeff Kent will be on Survivor!  It is in the Philippines this time, and I for once might have to watch.  I'm hoping the cast will have to eat Balut.  Don't ask me what that is, you won't like the description.  (Hat Tip: Jon Weisman at Dodger Thoughts)  BTW, Topps made a Balut card for 2012 Allen & Ginter as a Culinary Curiosities insert card.  See it below.

• The ballhawk Zach Hample was in Atlanta for the Civil Rights Game featuring the Dodgers and Braves, and he has a bunch of pics from the day.  He even snagged some commemorative Civil Rights Game balls.
• Via eddieoaots on reddit, someone decided to edit Angel Compos' wikipedia page- he was the umpire involved in the recent Mattingly and Kemp ejections.

• The Melky Cabrera suspension for PED just got weird.  Daily News has the story.

In a bizarre attempt to avoid a 50-game drug suspension, San Francisco Giants star Melky Cabrera created a fictitious website and a nonexistent product designed to prove he inadvertently took the banned substance that caused a positive test under Major League Baseball’s drug program.
