Blog Kiosk: 5/8/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Kenley Jansen had an eventful Saturday evening. Not only did he enter the game with a four-run lead in the eighth inning, striking out a Padre with the bases loaded, but he also had a chance at an at-bat the next half inning. As you can see in the pic above, the tall right-hander got some wood on the pitch. Unfortunately, the result was just a ground out to the shortstop.

BTW, Jansen has only one career hit to his name, and he recorded that in 2010 -- his rookie season. It was off of Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick in the fifth inning at Dodger Stadium, and he was inserted in as a pinch hitter for reliever Ramon Troncoso. His single lead to a run scoring a few batters later.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1941 the Giants and Dodgers play an Army-Navy Relief exhibition game that raises over $60,000. Brooklyn edged out their rivals, 7-6, on a Dolph Camilli homer run. As the story goes, in 1947 St. Louis Cardinals owner Sam Breason (who denied this) stopped a team protest during their first meeting with Jackie Robinson and the Dodgers. In 1973 Willie Stargell hit an Andy Messersmith pitch out of Dodger Stadium. It was the second time he has accomplished the feat at the stadium and only the second time it had ever happened. In 1981 Fernando Valenzuela throws his seventh straight victory to open the season, shutting out the Mets by a score of 1-0 at Shea Stadium.

  • Per Bill Plunkett at the Daily News; "Dodgers’ Rich Hill closing in on return to rotation."
“That’s kind of a little bit of the message,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of his discussion with Hill after the left-hander’s most recent bullpen session Saturday afternoon. “If you’re one start away from getting a major-league start, you’ve got to get guys out. I was pretty clear.”

  • Eric Gagne has been signed, but not with the Dodgers. Per the Long Island Ducks; "Ducks Sign Cy Young Winner Gagne."
The three-time Atlantic League champion Long Island Ducks today announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Eric Gagne. The 10-year MLB veteran begins his first season with the Ducks and 16th in professional baseball.

“Eric is similar to so many former Major League players that utilize the Atlantic League as a showcase to be seen by all 30 big league clubs,” said Ducks President/GM Michael Pfaff. “The Ducks are pleased to offer him this opportunity.”
  • You should not expect SportsNEt LA to expand any further this season. Per Bill Shaikin at the LA Times; "Dodgers to be no-shows on over-the-air TV."
Sunday marks the last of the scheduled 10 KTLA simulcasts this season. Beyond then, the majority of Southern California households that do not or cannot get Spectrum will not see SportsNet LA, the Dodgers-owned channel that airs the team’s games.
  • Per Matthew Morris at the Niagara Gazette; "Journey through history: Stanley Rojek: From fighting in WWII to fighting MLB’s color barrier." He was a vocal supporter of Jackie Robinson in 1947.
“The war years may have retarded the chances of some young players, but I am one of the fortunate,” he once told Sporting News magazine. “I had the experience of playing with and against seasoned major league stars.”
“Ours is a free country where you can achieve and fulfill any dream and master your own destiny. Be bold. Never ever give up. If you believe you can, you will. You’ve invested a lot to arrive to this great day. You took a gamble to get here. But this is not Las Vegas. What happened here must not stay here. Go share it with the world. I believe you will. Who will? Spartans will.”
