Blog Kiosk: 9/12/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

After a lengthy rain delay the Dodgers continued on their streak of loses -- losing to the Giants late last night, 8-6. Ugh! Per Ken Gurnick and Chris Haft at MLB.com:
"I wouldn't say it's demoralizing, but it's disappointing," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. "Our guys played hard, I thought we were going to win that game and we were in position to, but we couldn't hold the lead."

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1930 Dodger catcher Al Lopez hit the last Major League bounced home run. It was off Ray Kolp at Ebbets Field. Prior to the rule change any hit ball that bounced over the outfield walls was ruled a homer. Now, it'll be a ground-rule double. In 1963 the NY Mets hold a pregame ceremony in honor of Brooklyn favorite Duke Snider - "I look up into the stands, and it looks like Ebbets Field. The Mets are wonderful, but you can’t take the Dodger out of Brooklyn". In 2000 Dave Hanson broke former Dodger Johnny Frederick's record for pinch-hit home runs during a season with his seventh pinch-homer of the year against Curt Schilling of the Diamondbacks.  BTW, Johnny Frederick set his record of six pinch-homers on this exact same date in 1932.

  • Just in case your interested -- Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider; "Preliminary 2018 MLB schedule announced."
  • Per Tracy Ringolsby at MLB.com; "Longtime scout Didier dies at 90: Linked to Gibson's famous home run, evaluator discovered HOFers Dawson, Carter."
"Padnah, you look for what a young man can do," (Didier) said. "Anybody can find things he can't do. When you are talking about a sport where hitting .300 is success you know there's a lot of failure along the way."
"We have a lot of good players we're still evaluating," he said. "When you have the lead that we had, you can prioritize in health and trying to keep guys sharp versus trying to win every single game. But the challenge is keeping the sharpness and, obviously, we haven't been sharp. I expect us to turn it around with a core group. The positions we're talking about, anyone can debate who is that right person."
Roberts acknowledged his club's confidence "is probably wavering a little bit." He said he expected the last-place Giants "to bring their best" against the Dodgers.
  • Via Tyler Maun at MiLB.com; "Cuadrado's big night leads Raptors to sweep: Ogden will play for first Pioneer League championship since 1969."
"He plays hard every single night on all sides of the baseball," said Kertenian, lauding his player's ability to contribute defensively and on the basepaths as well. "He's very young, but he's been steady. He's been our steadiest hitter all year. Behind all of that is a young man who's 19 years old, turns 20 tomorrow, from Venezuela, which is a challenging place to be in our world right now. He shows grit and determination and true character every single day."
