Blog Kiosk: 12/10/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Check out this motley crew. As you may know, fan favorite Kiké Hernández officially tied the knot this weekend, and a whole bunch of his buds are in town to celebrate. Congrats!

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1919 the National League officially banned the spitball. The American league would follow the next season. Current spitballers would be grandfathered and be allowed to continue throwing the pitch; including Dodger Hall of Famer Burleigh Grimes, who would eventually be the last legal spitballer in the game. In 1986 the Dodgers trade first baseman Greg Brock to Milwaukee for reliever Tim Crews and starter Tim Leary -- both of whom would play important parts during their 1988 World Championship run two years later. In 2012 the Dodgers signed free agent starter Zack Greinke to a six-year $147 million contract that includes an opt-out clause after its thrid season.

  • ICYMI: I'd like to extend a hearty congratulations to both Lee Smith and Harold Baines for their recent Today’s Game era selection into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Rather than whine and complain, I think it's best to welcome and congratulate both of these fine ballplayers.
  • ICYMI: Apparently, Yasiel Puig is disgruntled, per Ron Cervenka at Think Blue LA. Sounds to me like someone is spreading rumors to make a trade more palatable to a fanbase that has grown to love the enigmatic Cuban.
  • BTW, the Dodgers hired an Assistant GM. Per Mark Polishuk at MLB Trade Rumors; "Dodgers Hire Jeff Kingston As VP/Assistant GM."
Kingston is just 41 years old, though he already has close to two decades’ worth of experience in Major League front offices.  Kingston began as an intern with the Padres and worked in San Diego for nine years before moving to Seattle in 2009.  When former Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik was fired in 2015, Kingston briefly took over as Seattle’s interim general manager before Jerry Dipoto was hired as the permanent GM.  Upon Dipoto joining the organization, Kingston was promoted to his VP/assistant GM title and was heavily involved in all facets of the operation, including overseeing the analytics and player development departures.
“Scott Boras’ handling of Jose Fernandez’s death was a joke,” said Samson on Le Batard’s show discrediting the world-renowned agent. Samson further alleged that Boras did not adequately advise his clients. “You have a death file on your players? Except you don’t get insurance for them?… You didn’t advise him to put money away?” said Samson about Fernandez and Boras’ suspected lack of care for his clients. He further elaborated on Boras’ lack of involvement in Fernandez’s funeral arrangements. “And then you cry and don’t pay for anything –nothing, not the funeral. Jeffrey (former Marlins owner) paid for everything –the funeral, the whole procession that Jose had.” The former Marlins president continued to be critical of Boras when he stated, “Where’s Boras? Not calling him. Why? Because Jose can’t make him money any more. . . He’s a lecherous agent who manipulates owners” (Miami Herald). Samson believes that Boras is an agent who does not work in the best interest of his clients and is solely focused on what they bring to the table financially.
