Blog Kiosk: 6/1/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

Here's a fun photo that is currently available on auction through RMY (link here). It features what looks like the entire Brooklyn team surrounding the piano, while singing a tune. Skipper Burt Shotton is on the piano bench and Jackie Robinson is on the far right -- standing behind Duke Snider. Unfortunately, the pic isn't dated, but it's thought to be from the 1947 season -- primarily because Shotton was known to not wear the typically manager uniform when he managed the club that year.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1955 the Brooklyn Dodgers set a franchise record when they hit six home runs in a game during their victory over the Milwaukee Braves at Ebbets Field. Duke Snider hit three homers in the contest (becoming the first Dodger to do it twice), to go along with home runs by Jackie RobinsonPee Wee Reese and Roy CampanellaIn 1962 Don Drysdale defeated the Philadelphia Phillies for the 13th consecutive time - a streak that began in 1958. I remember this next incident so well. In 1997 Wilton Guerrero shattered his bat during an at-bat and immediately scrambled to pick up the bat pieces instead of running to first base. Obviously, home plate umpire Steve Ripley got suspicious and subsequently searched the remains. Ripley found cork, ejected Guerrero and then the league suspended for eight games.

  • Still no statement from the team of Jackie, Campy and Newk on this weekends riots.
  • A special notice from the Dodgers on tonight's scheduled Zoom Party, via their twitter. It has been postponed:
As the story goes, after Hershiser developed into a star for the Dodgers, the school offered its famed son an honorary degree. Hershiser — who still had a ways to go before graduating when he was selected by the Dodgers in the 17th round of the 1979 MLB draft — reputedly replied thanks but no thanks, saying he wanted a real degree instead. BG suggested he would have to earn it and the relationship changed.

TR: Once you got started with Great Lakes what was that experience like? Had you ever been in Michigan before? Did you have a host family?
JR: It was my first time in Michigan when I went to the Loons and was with an awesome host family Kathy and Tony for two seasons. If you’re reading this, hi! There wasn’t much to do outside of baseball but when you’re with the team and host family you made the most of it. Very small city. But great people and I’ll never forget my time there. However, the baseball stadium was amazing and the staff was top notch. Loved being at the field.
  • I grew up hating the guy (because he always seemed to find a way to beat us), but always respected the man. Dale Murphy on the riots, via his twitter:

“This year is already going to be half a season, maybe less. It’s already going to be kind of awkward to get things going. People are going to get sick. We might start up and have to shut down again. I would say let’s just work on what we want in the collective bargaining agreement for next year and let’s just get that one right.”
  • I'm not sure how I feel about this. Trevor Bauer a future Dodger? Per Jeffrey Bellone at Dodgers Way -- "Trevor Bauer wants to play in Los Angeles someday."
“I look forward to playing for the Dodgers one day,” Bauer told a fan on his Fan Fridays YouTube show. “I grew up out in Valencia, so I’d love to come home.”
