A Brief Card Show Visit: LB Coin Show and My Only Purchase

I wanted to put up a brief post here covering my visit this past Saturday to the Long Beach Coin Expo.  As the name suggest, the show is mostly about coins and stamps, but for the first time in a decade there would be some sports related memorabilia available for sale.  So, I decided to head to Long Beach with a my free pass in hand and the hope that I'll have a chance to browse through table after table of cards.  Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

I don't quite know what I was thinking.  I already knew it was a coin-centric show.  Did I really believe there would be an overflow of cards and memorabilia to gaze at?  Yes, I did.  So, the inevitable letdown came on strong.

If you saw my post from last week mentioning the show and decided to visit Long Beach for the afternoon, then I want to apologize now.  It clearly was not what I expected.  There were just a handful of card tables at the show - and when I say handful I mean no more than 5.  Heck, it was more like 3 actual dealer set-ups, an auction house and PSA card grading.  That was it.  Really, just that.

Fortunately, the afternoon was not all lost.  I did see some awesome Babe Ruth memorabilia at the Memory Lane Auctions booth and picked up a Dodger vintage card to add to my collection.  Check out some photos I took below.

From Memory Lane Auctions, below is a Babe Ruth game-used bat, and a Ruth rookie card just below it.

This was pretty cool.  A kid sent a letter to Babe Ruth asking him to fill out his questionnaire, sign it, and send it back.  Ruth is asked his full name, the name of his wife, and what year he is going to hit 60 home runs- Babe wrote in 1927.  It is undated, so it isn't clear if he predicted this feat, or if he was only able to respond to the kid after he had already set the home run record.

A circa 1920's Yankees team photo.  Murderer's Row.

A Ruth autograph on a really cool card.  I'm not sure what card this is.

Here are more random Ruth photos and autographs.

More random Ruth photos and autographs.  BTW, I had to be a little sneaky when taking the pics.  I had asked permission and told that it would be OK, but was later told to be a little more inconspicuous.

Now, on to my only purchase of the day.  Since the tables that were in attendance focused on vintage cards I was at least able to see enough to keep me interested in browsing around.  I spotted a small stack 1955 Topps Doubleheaders and decided to take a closer look.  These are fun little cards with great drawings.  It is much skinnier than a typical Baseball card, but about 25% longer.  Drawings are on both sides, and they can be folded over to complete the smaller drawing on the reverse.

There was a graded Jim Hughes/ Karl Spooner card at (what I thought was) a lofty price.  It was, in my mind, also overgraded by PSA, so I passed on it.  There was a noticeable wrinkle/corner crease along where the card is folded, and was much worse than what you would normally see from a card that has a fold right through the middle of it.

Then I found a Don Zimmer card that looked just right.  Check out the pics above and below.  As you can see, the Zimmer is the folded smaller card while Preston Ward of the Pirates is the elongated portion of the card.  Stats for both players are also on the reverse.  Click on any pic to embiggen.

Tommy in Stable and Comfortable Condition

With a collective gasp, all of Dodger nation was shook by the news from early this morning that Tommy Lasorda was submitted into the hospital for a heart attack on Monday.  Tommy was not at the MLB Draft yesterday where he was slated to announce the draft picks for the team.  As TMZ noted, Lasorda's absence at the draft was noticeable and caused some to worry.  Thankfully, as noted by the Dodgers in a just released press notice, Tommy is fine:

Los Angeles Dodgers Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda suffered a mild heart attack Monday while in New York for the Major League Baseball 2012 First-Year Player Draft. Lasorda, 84, was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center for treatment.

Doctors inserted a stent to correct a blocked artery in Lasorda’s heart. He is resting comfortably and in stable condition.

“The doctors confirmed I do bleed Dodger Blue,” Lasorda joked. “I’m looking forward to being back at the stadium to cheer on the Dodgers.”

I was glad to read that Tommy is back to his old self.  For those interested, TMZ has some exclusive footage from this past Sunday evening as Lasorda regaled the patrons at a Brooklyn Italian restaurant with his wonderful singing.

Catching Up on Some Dodgers News

With all of the excitement of the Kings playoff run currently taking over my mind I've been a bit remiss in sharing some recent Dodger news.  So, below is a brief roundup.

-------------------------------

The 1st round of the Draft was yesterday and the Dodger chose high school shortstop Corey Seager with the 18th overall pic.  Via the Dodgers press release:
The Los Angeles Dodgers today selected Northwest Cabarrus High School (Concord, NC) shortstop Corey Seager with their first-round pick (18th overall) and Puerto Rico Baseball Academy shortstop Jesmuel Valentin with the 51st overall pick in the supplemental round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.  Assistant General Manager, Scouting Logan White made the announcement.

Seager, a 6-foot-4, 205-pounder, batted .519 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI this season to earn a selection as the Gatorade North Carolina Baseball Player of the Year. The 18-year-old also stole 13 bases while posting a 1.062 slugging percentage and a .664 on-base percentage. The younger brother of Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager was rated by Baseball America as the top third baseman in the 2012 draft.

“We’re excited to have taken a quality young man,” said White. “He’s athletic, can hit and comes from a great family with the bloodlines we look for.”

Seager was selected for the 2010 USA Baseball 16-and-Under National Team and earned All-Tournament honors by helping Team USA win a gold medal at the Pan-American Games, batting .514 with a home run and 12 RBI in nine games.
Since he was a member of Team USA Seager already has some cards that you can add to your collection.  Check them out below.  Click the pic below to embiggen.  Unfortunately, Valentin does not appear to have a card in the market.

Jay Guerra goes on the 15-day DL.  Via the Dodgers press release:
The Los Angeles Dodgers today placed right-handed reliever Javy Guerra on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to June 3) with right knee inflammation, selected the contract of right-handed reliever Shawn Tolleson from Triple-A Albuquerque and transferred right-hander Matt Guerrier to the 60-day disabled list...

Tolleson, 24, will hope to make his Major League debut and has gone a combined 0-1 with five saves and a 2.82 ERA in 19 relief appearances with Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Albuquerque. The Texas native has limited opposing hitters to a .198 batting average with 34 strikeouts in 22.1 combined innings this season, last pitching on Thursday with two strikeouts in a scoreless inning against New Orleans. Tolleson was named the Dodgers' 2011 Branch Rickey Minor League Pitcher of the Year, going a combined 7-2 with 25 saves and a 1.17 ERA in 57 relief appearances with Single-A Great Lakes, Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and Chattanooga. Tolleson, who will wear No. 38, has 178 strikeouts in 120.0 innings in his three professional seasons and was originally selected by Los Angeles in the 30th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Baylor University.
Tolleson also has several Baseball cards to collect.

Vintage PostCard Collection: Who Wins!!

Who Wins!!

The Kings Win!!

They now have a 3 games to 0 lead in the 7 game series.  I don't want to get too far ahead of myself (after all, Kings fans are conditioned to expect the worse), but it might be fair to say that the Devils are toast.  As I've read and heard numerous times during this playoff run, the Kings make good teams look average.  They have done that throughout the playoffs, and there is no reason to believe they will falter now.  I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that this coming Wednesday I'll be celebrating in the street of downtown LA.

If the Kings win it, please win it at home.  I want nothing more than to see that shiny cup held aloft in our house.

Above is another c. 1910's vintage postcard  in my collection.  I thought it was an apt collectible to share this morning.

Blog Kiosk/ Dodgers Links & Kings Videos: 6/4/2012

Who am I kidding.  Right now, I can't think about anything but hockey.  With that in mind, here's a pic found via twitter of Magic all dressed in Kings Black and Silver.  Check out a handful of Dodger related links, but if you want to get pumped up about this evenings game enjoy the Kings videos below.

  • The nicest thing about the Kings and the NHL is how creative fans are when it comes to these custom made videos and how willing the league is to allow fans to use actual game footage.  It's a win/ win.  Fans get to use their skills to root for their team while the league gets some free advertising.  If only MLB looked the other way when Baseball fans try to do the same thing.  Anyway, I found the following videos fun to watch.

I'm not sure if this is real or not, but apparantly there's a big cup next to the Hollywood sign.

A Kings Card

In honor of todays Game 3 in the Stanley Cup Finals between the Kings and Devils, please check out this over-sized hockey card released by Upper Duck during the 1991-1992 season.  It is about the size of a postcard and features the scurrying action of netminder Kelly Hrudy.  He's low to the ground ready to pounce on any puck headed his way, not unlike our current wonder-kid in goal Jonathan Quick.

Better yet, the reverse of the card is just as striking.  It is a painted collage of several great Kings players and, inexplicably includes the former owner who was eventually jailed for fraud.  Bruce McNall was a giant personality in LA at this time, and deserves credit for revitalizing the franchise after several decades of stagnant ownership by Jack Cooke.  Unfortunately, his remake of the team didn't result in a Stanley Cup victory, but we can rectify that now.

The Kings players showcased below include goalie Rogie Vachon, Luc Robitaille, Wayne Gretzky, and Marcel Dionne. BTW, Marcel remains my favorite all-time favorite hockey player.

Go Kings Go!!!!
