Vintage Photos of a Pete Reiser Beaning and Babe Ruth as a Coach at RMY Auctions
RMY currently has their June Collectors Auction available online and it includes a couple fantastic vintage press photos featuring the Dodgers.
Featured above is an ailing Pete Reiser being stretchered off the field by his teammates after being hit in the head by Phillies starting pitcher Ike Pearson at Ebbets Field. (Auction Link Here) It happened during the third inning of a game on April 23, 1941.
As you know, Reiser was famous for playing the game on the reckless side of things. He would constantly crash onto the outfield walls to chase a fly and would seemingly refuse to duck away on pitches high and tight. This kind of play by Pete resulted in numerous concussions and trips to the hospital.
Blog Kiosk: 6/6/2016 - Dodgers Links - Crawford, Urias and Corey Seager
Corey Seager is making it look easy.
Yesterday afternoon he continued his hot-hitting ways by launching a couple more homers. Overall, he recorded six hits, five of which were home runs, six RBI's and a walk against the Braves this weekend. Per Mike DiGiovanna at the LA Times:
“It’s kind of déjà vu,” Roberts said. “It keeps happening every day, and I could get used to it. He’s got a very sound, short swing and power to all fields. He can hit any pitch to any part of the ballpark. It’s special. There’s only a few guys who can do that. But it starts with his pitch recognition.”Seager had this to add, via Matthew Moreno at Dodgers Nation:
“I was putting good swings on balls, getting lucky, elevating them and they’re going out,” Seager said on Sunday. “It’s just one of those things that you try to do every day but it’s working right now.”BTW, the Seager's very first 2016 Topps Now card that was available over the weekend sold 1,900 copies. - This Day in Dodgers History: In 1918 Casey Stengel came up to bat for the first time at Ebbets Field after being traded that past winter. While at the plate he called for time, lifted his hat and had a bird fly out. The entire stadium was in laughter. This is absolutely true! In 1957 the first fog-out in Major League history happens at Ebbets Field. In 1990 the Dodgers recorded their 8,000 National League victory. They defeated Atlanta 8-5. In 2006 (being the sixth day of the sixth month of the sixth year of the century) the Dodgers score six runs in the sixth inning during the sixth game of the homestand. Also, on this day in 2006 the Dodgers drafted Clayton Kershaw with the seventh overall pic in the amateur draft. Jon Weisman at Dodger Insider wrote a bit about this day here.
- Happy Birthday, Mark Ellis!

A Corey Seager 2016 Topps Now Card - #123 - Mashes 3 HRs
Sorry about this belated notice. Following Corey Seager's outstanding game at the plate on Friday Topps decided to make available a 2016 Topps Now card to celebrate it. Check it out in this post. Go here to order. You have until 12:30 this afternoon.
As you know, Seager ripped three solo home runs the other day to single-handily lead the Dodgers over the Braves. No doubt, he was in the zone. Via Cary Osborne at Dodger Insider:
“It was one of those things that it didn’t matter where it was thrown, it looked like it was on a tee,” Seager said. “That’s a good feeling when you’re hitting.”UPDATE: The final tally on this card is 1,900 copies sold.

Blog Kiosk: 6/4/2016 - Dodgers Links - Seager! Seager! Seager!
What a night. Corey Seager was a one man wrecking machine. He blasted three home runs to lead the Dodgers to a 4-2 victory, and even received his first curtain call of his career. Per Cary Osborne at Dodger Insider:
“That’s fun, that put a smile on my face,” Seager said of the atmosphere in the dugout after he hit home run No. 3 — a liner over the short fence in left field off Atlanta reliever Hunter Cervenka. “That’s something you really enjoy and soak in.”His homers marks the first time a Dodger rookie has hit three dingers in one game since Don Demeter in 1959.

- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1964 Sandy Koufax would throw his third career no-hitter against the Phillies. In 1968 Don Drysdale threw his sixth consecutive shutout of the season. His scoreless streak was extended to 54 innings. This is also the day Robert Kennedy made note of Drysdale's efforts in a speech at the Ambassador Hotel after winning the CA primary. Soon thereafter, he would be assassinated. In 1972 the Dodgers retired Roy Campanella's number - #39. In 1998 the Dodgers traded Hideo Nomo to the Mets for Dave Mlicki and Greg McMichael. Ugh!

A Happy Belated Welcome to the Dodgers, Casey Fien!
Casey Fien has been fantastic for the Dodgers since being called up from Oklahoma City a week ago. He has gotten into three games, and struck out seven of the ten batters he's faced; including Kris Bryant twice.
That's not to say that Fien is the answer to our bullpen prayers. After all, three innings of work is hardly enough to go on. Still, you gotta love the results.
Fien has shown us good control on a deceptive fastball that runs in the mid-90's and looks to have a bit of a sink to it. This causes batters to swing and miss more often than average. Scoutables.com tells me that his fastballs had 23% of swings miss; while 10% is league average. His last time out, on Wednesday, he faced four batters and mowed down three of them on swinging strikes. Hopefully, this trend continues.
In honor of his work thus far and since I had yet to officially welcome him to the team on this blog (save a post from a few weeks ago announcing his initial pickup), I decided to make a couple fantasy Baseball cards of him in Dodger Blue. For the card on the left I using a photo taken by Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2016 and the 1992 Leaf Baseball card design. For the Fien card on the right I grabbed another photo taken by Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2016 and the 1997 Topps Baseball card design.
