eBay: George Washington's Hair

Unbelievable. First there was the Mother Teresa autographed Allen & Ginter card that sold for $10,099.99. Now we have a strand of hair belonging to former President George Washington on a Allen & Ginter card available for sale on eBay right now. It currently is at an incredible price of $8,300.00 as of Monday morning.
The hair is said to have been originally obtained from Martha Washington's side of the family and passed through generations. It was acquired by Topps via the collection of noted hair and autograph collector John Reznikoff. It may sound strange, but collecting hair from famous people was fairly common in the 18th and 19th centuries.
UPDATE: Apparently the original auction was pulled for not complying to some unknown eBay rule. Have no fear though, it has returned. Check out the new auction here.

eBay: Vintage Mexican Baseball Card Find

Latin American Baseball cards from the 1940's to 1950's are rare and extremely difficult to find. Oftentimes, they were made of lightweight thin paper stock instead of stiffer cardboard. They were also glued into scrap books or albums. This was the most popular means of collecting cards in Latin America. For many years Topps Company made a distributed Spanish versions of their Baseball cards in Venezuela, but they consisted of only MLB players and, often, resembled the version sold in America. If you were a fan of the local leagues that played throughout the region you were out of luck. Very few sets were available for the local public.
Unfortunately, the lack of cards for these leagues meant the lack of cards for American Negro League players. Many Negro League players from America came to Mexico, Cuba and other countries to play Baseball. Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige and others were stars down south.
Fortunately, the age of the internet and eBay has helped us discover once unknown sets. Recently, a traveler through Mexico was rummaging through a curio shop when he stumbled upon this once unknown set. (At least I can't find any reference of this set anywhere)
The photos above and below are from the Album de Beisbol (Profesional) Liga Mexicana XXI Temporada 1945. Check out the once unknown card of Hall of Famer Ray Dandridge above. There are some action photos below.
I stumbled upon this auction several days after it opened, but it was already priced well above my budget. Not surprisingly, it closed at price any auction house would be proud of. It sold for $2,450.00.

Dodgers are Blogging

Via Diamond Leung, we find out that Dodger pitchers Chad Billingsley and Takashi Saito are now blogging. So far, Chad has only one post, but I look forward to reading more. Saito's blog is in Japanese and I have not been able to get it translated yet. If anyone knows a good way to do this, please pass that information along.

YouTube: Dodger Videos

There are some great recent Dodger videos on YouTube that includes the historic, the funny and the entertaining.

I don't remember Rick Monday being a sports broadcaster for KTTV, but here he is from 1987.

Sotheby's/ SCP Auction: Del Crandall Collection

Some of you may know that Sotheby's/ SCP is currently running the auction featuring Barry Bonds homerun baseballs #755 & #756. Fortunately, those balls are not the only reason to be excited about this action. What's also for sale are choice pieces coming from former AAA manager of the Albuquerque Dukes, Del Crandall. From 1976 to 1982 Crandall was highly successful in bringing up some of the Dodgers most popular and storied players. For his efforts during the Dodgers 1981 season he was given a World Series Championship ring. It is now available along with other championship and all-star rings, bats, programs, etc. from his playing and managerial career. Check out his stuff here (Whoops, so about the bad link. Just do a search in the description field under the name Del Crandall and you will pull up all of the items from his collection.).

Another piece I wanted to point out is the below photograph featuring Roy Campanella's 1952 All-Star Barnstorming Negro League Team, complete with autographs. Players include Campanella, Leon Day, Lary Doby, Hank Thompson, Monte Irvin, recent HOF'er Alex Pompez and others. Unfortunately, the photo is very worn, but would still look great on the wall.
