Puig's Autograph Named 5th Most Dangerous Signature

One of the premier sports autograph authentication services, PSA/DNA, recently released a list of the "10 Most Dangerous Autographs" to purchase on the secondary market in 2013, and it included a big surprise.  Check out that article here.

The list includes the typically cast of athletic greats; like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Wayne Gretzky and Michael Jordan.  After all, these are the kind of names you would expect to see forged.  The more famous and legendary the star, the greater the likelihood that fake autographed merchandise will be manufactured to sell to unsuspecting collectors.  But, there was one name on the list that threw me for a loop.

Yasiel Puig's name was on it, and they named him the 5th most dangerous signature.  Considering his quick and sudden rise to fame, I shouldn't really be surprised.  Puig came out of nowhere, so fans and collectors alike flocked to card shops like it was Black Friday to grab a little memento. Unfortunately, many of those signed items are likely fakes.

From PSA/DNA's story:
Yasiel Puig - ($150 for a signed photo to $300 or more for a single-signed baseball.) In Los Angeles, a young star emerged in baseball by the name of Yasiel Puig. This highly-touted prospect from Cuba, showed immense power, a rocket arm and an overall level of athleticism rarely seen on the field. Now, at only 22 years of age, Puig seems poised for a bright future. When word got out about his first private signing in 2013, the autograph tickets sold out immediately and at an unheard of price for a rookie - $150 per flat item! If the Dodgers can be competitive moving forward, Puig will be able to play on a big stage. As a result of his sudden rise and the general lack of genuine Puig autographs available to collectors, a large number of forgeries entered the market during the past year. In fact, PSA/DNA estimates that nearly 90% of the alleged Puig autographs submitted in 2013 were rejected. It will be interesting to see where his career and autograph market go in 2014.

The last part is the kicker.  Nearly 9 out of 10 Puig autographs submitted to them were regarded as fake.  Wow!

For fans interested in added his John Hancock to your mantle, all I can suggest is getting it in person. Spring Training or the upcoming FanFest might be your best bet.  Or, you can try to snag one of those Puig autographed certified Baseball cards that can be found on eBay (this is an expensive proposition).

Here's a clear sign that Baseball is just around the corner.  Topps unveiled a pic on twitter of a recently printed 2014 Topps Baseball uncut card sheet to collectors, and I had to share it here.  If you look closely (click on the pic to embiggen) you can see the Hanley Ramirez card on the bottom right.
As the first South Korean player to be posted, some wondered how much the difference in competitive talent would hurt Ryu. One season doesn’t make a career, however it seems as though Ryu is the real deal.

Vin Scully Sure Can Carry a Tune - Watch Him Sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at Wrigley

It's amazing how one little video can keep you smiling for hours.  Check out what I mean below.

Video Link:

This video is from April 1998 at Wrigley Field, and was just posted by MLB on youtube last week.  This happened just a couple of months after the death of Harry Caray.

  • The Dodgers continue to additions to their scouting staff.  Beyond the high priced salaries, this is the real reason it's a great luxury to have wealthy owners willing to spend.  Per a Dodgers press release:  (An no, Juan Garcia-Puigis not related to Yasiel)
The Los Angeles Dodgers today announced eight additions to their professional and international scouting staffs.

Los Angeles will have two new advance scouts next year with Willie Fraser, who originally joined the club in 2012 as a professional scout, and the hiring of long-time White Sox scout Gary Pellant. Chris Smith returns to the Dodger organization as a professional scout after four seasons with Cleveland, joining pro scouting additions Ron Mahay (14-year MLB pitcher), Peter Bergeron (former MLB outfielder) and Greg Booker, who is returning to the scouting ranks after spending the last four seasons as pitching coach for Washington's Triple-A Syracuse club. In addition, Special Assistants, Player Personnel Josh Bard and Aaron Sele will expand their duties to include pro scouting.

Internationally, the club hired Hidenori Sueyoshi as Senior Manager, International Scouting Operations, Rafael Colon as Special Advisor, International Player Performance and Juan Garcia-Puig as a scout for Spain.

Kershaw Gets His Cy Young WWE Belt from Vince McMahon

Back in mid-November, during the Baseball's year-end award season, MLB decided to tweet something interesting to the world (see it above).  With social media being a huge driver for marketing and sales nowadays, why not try to manufacture something in hopes of hitting viral gold?  Well, MLB struck it rich when they shared a WWE/WWF style championship belt they created on photoshop for recently announced CY Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw.  (They did the same for other award winners, as well)

Understandably, the twitter world was excited and hopeful that such a thing could exist.  Unfortunately, MLB was just joking around with us, but Vince McMahon, the big cheese at the WWE, never jokes around.  Within 8 hours of MLB tweeting the photo, McMahon followed up with a tweet of his own promising to make those belts a reality.  See it below.

Envious, was I.  Heck, I'm sure many MLB'ers were jealous.  After all, who wouldn't want this?

Well, this afternoon we find out that Vince McMahon has followed through.  From a screen grab of a tweet by Clayton Kershaw, we find out that he has gotten his belt.  See it below.

Unfortunately, the Cy Young belt does not look anything like the mock-up created by MLB.  That's understandable since I'm sure trademark and copyright issues surely reared its ugly head.  Still, this might be one of the coolest things ever, and I'm sure every future winner will be wondering if they will get their own.

BTW, Nick Punto's wife chimed in with her own 2 cents on twitter.

I would love to see this.  We can call him Captain Claw, and he can run around the stadium with a dish brush in hand while body-slammin' the opposition.

UPDATE:  Zack Greinke's wife also provides some hilarious commentary.

I think were about to witness a little rumble!

UPDATE II:  Holy Moly!  The Iron Sheik just responded to the Cy Young belt on twitter.  This has just hit epic status!
