2015 Topps Archives - The Dodger Base Cards

Below are pics of all the Dodger base cards found in packs of 2015 Topps Archives packs.  Go here to check out my previous post on this set - most of which feature the Will Ferrell Dodger Baseball card.  Here is a complete checklist of the set.

This set provides an nostalgic look at vintage Topps designs featuring mostly modern players.  This year they borrow designs from the 1957, 1976 and 1983 Topps Baseball sets.

Blog Kiosk: 6/15/2015 - Dodger Links - Pederson, Seager and Draftee Sborz

Was Joc laying down on the job?

Hardly.  Instead, he made a fantastic catch against the centerfield wall off the bat of Justin Upton in the ninth inning of last night's game.  It ultimately preserved a 2-2 tie, and allowed the club an opportunity to eventually win the game in the 12th inning.  Via Mark Saxon at ESPN:
He admitted the situation made it a big catch, and said, "The harder one is the line drive over your head, but it's up there for difficulty." He credited his dad and Dodgers outfield instructor Damon Mashore for refining his route running.

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said the team will promote Seager when he is ready, not because Rollins is batting .200. He said the team has a road map for Seager’s development that includes more seasoning at Triple-A. The Dodgers think he could benefit from continuing to face the veteran pitchers at Triple-A and continuing to adjust to a faster game defensively.

“We feel like he’s in a really good place to be a really good major league player for a long time, but when that is will be determined by when he’s ready to do it, when we feel like it will put him in the best position to be as good as he can be as quickly as he can be,” Friedman said.
Jackie says the Dodgers blew a chance to land Willie Mays when he was a 16-year-old phenom with the Birmingham Black Barons. “The Dodger players were much impressed with Mays when we played an exhibition game with the Barons,” said Jackie. “The front office in Brooklyn was contracted, but Wid Mathews, Mr. Rickey’s assistant, turned down Willie because Wid said he couldn’t hit a curve ball.”
"He throws strikes. He attacks you. That slider is, what, 84 to sometimes up to 87, 88 mph. It's a pretty darned good pitch," Virginia coach Brian O'Connor said. "So you have a lot of confidence in him that he's going to go at them and give his best. And he's been pretty darned near as good as you can be all year long for us."
A volunteer digging through mounds of material left inside the Parker Homestead in Little Silver recently found them, tucked safely inside an old cookie tin that had been placed in a box with hundreds of postcards and other items.

Blog Kiosk: 6/13/2015 - Dodger Links - AJ Ellis, Hector Olivera and Andre Ethier

Check out who's on the cover of the summer issue of Sports Spectrum magazine - AJ Ellis, that's who.  More info here.

Below are some links to check out:
In six games with the Drillers, the 30-year-old Olivera went 7 for 22 with a grand slam and three walks, for an .855 OPS. He also had a slick defensive play at third base in Thursday’s game, charging a ball hit down the line.
  • Jon also tells us that we have picked up another infielder in a trade: "Dodgers have sight for Torreyes, designate Barney for assignment."  Via a Dodgers press release:
Torreyes, 22, has a .299 career batting average with 18 home runs and 231 RBI in 537 minor league games in six professional seasons with the Reds (2010-11), Cubs (2012-13), Astros (2013-15) and Blue Jays (2015) organizations . He’s primarily appeared at second base (353 games) during the course of his career, but has also played shortstop (91 games), third base (55 games) and the outfield (22 games), with a .975 combined fielding percentage. This year, the native of Venezuela has combined to hit .175 with 14 RBI in 35 games with Houston’s Triple-A Fresno and Toronto’s Double-A New Hampshire. Torreyes was originally signed by the Reds as a non-drafted free agent on Feb. 23, 2010.
“No, I don’t think it’s an ‘I told you so’ situation at all. That was never any part of it,” Ethier says now. “It was ‘If you want me to help and help the team win, this is what I’m still able to do. Not the role I was doing last year.’ I could definitely do that role, too, but that’s not where I am at in my game yet. I’m still able to do it on a pretty much everyday basis.”
And even though the president made an appearance, the most fun moment of the evening came courtesy Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.) the only woman on the field. Wearing a Roman numeral IX (for Title IX) on the back of her Norwalk Eagles jersey, a high school in her district, she came up to pinch hit in the sixth. She was playing in her 12th Congressional Baseball Game, having only missed one year in her tenure because she had a baby, who is now 6 years old, and was sitting in the crowd.

“I’ve gotten used to it over the years. I grew up playing softball, and I grew up with four brothers who played baseball, so I’m pretty familiar with it,” Sanchez said. “Watching women’s sports and if you’ve ever seen college softball, anything men can do women can compete on that field. And it’s just a matter of time before those women run for Congress. We’re seeing younger women running for Congress and so, I still hold out that in the next few cycles we’ll get some young talent in that knows how to play and well come out and represent as well.”

  • The Dodgers 30th Round Draft pick in the recent draft, Logan Crouse, has opted to not go pro.  Instead he will attend Florida State University, per the video below.

Blog Kiosk: 6/12/2015 - Dodger Links - The Story Behind the Nancy Bea Hefley Situation

There was a bit of a brouhaha on twitter and various other social media sites yesterday as rumors swirled that Dodgers' longtime organist Nancy Bea Hefley was being pushed out of the organization.  As you can imagine, the Dodger faithful were less than pleased.  She has seen her role during games reduced significantly the past several years, and it appeared obvious that her dismissal was coming soon rather than later.  Well, she dispelled all of those rumors when she responded on twitter:
Unfortunately, the above is far from the entire story.  Bill Plaschke at the LA Times shared a piece last night that provides more detail: " Frustrated Dodgers' organist signals last notes, until team's overture."  Check out the story here.
"I am retiring at the end of this season," Hefley told The Times. "It's finally gotten to me."

Even her richest show tune wouldn't be proper accompaniment for what happened next.

The Facebook exchange began spreading. Twitter talk began buzzing. Hints of outrage began forming. Dodgers officials who had not been previously informed of Hefley's plans took notice.

Three hours after the original post appeared, one of those officials called Hefley and, soon thereafter, the woman who had been reduced to playing five minutes a day was suddenly un-retired after being promised a lifetime deal.
I get the desire for more modern tunes during games, but feel that the significantly diminished role given to her is both unwarranted and shortsighted.  There is room for what she does, and you have to find a way to bring her back to the game.  Her style is a reflection of the history of the franchise in Los Angeles.  To turn your back on that part of our collective past is like turning away family.  And ultimately, the Dodgers are family... And, Nancy Bea Hefley is family.

The photo above is via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2012.  Below are some links to check out:
“The first time you present information to a player, it’s brand new, totally foreign,” (Gabe) Kapler said. “The second time you present it to a player, it feels a little less awkward, a little uncomfortable. The third, fourth, fifth, sixth time they hear about wOBA and it being more indicative of positive performance than batting average, then it’s not so foreign and awkward anymore, and it feels like a conversation they’re ready to have.

“I believe it’s a commitment you make over time to help players understand how they’re being evaluated. You can’t quit halfway, because then everything goes out the window.”
"I think he can definitely be a home run and gap-to-gap guy," Rancho Cucamonga coach Bill Haselman said. "For his age, to hit [12] home runs in this league, that's a pretty awesome thing to do. They're pretty legit home runs, too."
"It's every man for himself," Ethier recalled. "It's not a competition against other teams, it's a competition of the guys in here, and may the best man win."

OMG! A Will Ferrell Dodger Autographed Card Just Sold for Huge Bucks!

I knew these cards would be big sellers, but the prices showing up on eBay are outrageous.

Check out the pic above.  It is tied to an auction that closed yesterday morning and features the very first 2015 Archives Will Ferrell autographed Dodger card to have sold at the online auction house.  This is what the description said:
I just pulled this from a target retail pack. 2015 topps archives will Ferrell on card auto. Card is # 2/10. This is in the Dodgers uniform. This will be one of the hottest cards of the year. Could be the first one pulled so far.
It was a "Buy It Now" sale and it apparently exchanged hands at a cool $2,000.00.  Check out the auction here.

BTW, the Ferrell Dodger card numbered at "01/10" is on eBay at the price of $2,159.99.  Check that auction out here.

Overall, it appears that four of these cards have sold on eBay.  They include:
    • Diamondbacks Ferrell at $899.99 (Auction Link);
    • Red Ferrell at $699.99 (Action Link);
    • Dodgers Ferrell at $2,000.00 (Auction Link); and
    • Mariners Ferrell (Auction Link) that sold at a best offer price - likely just below the $1,699.99 initial asking price.
