Something New for the Collection - 1949 NY Journal American Team Photos

This is something I've wanted for quite some time.

It's been on my list of "must-buys" and I'm happy to be able to finally add to my hoard of oddball Dodgers collectibles.  Best yet, it was a good deal.

Featured above is a 1949 Brooklyn Dodgers team photograph that was a premium giveaway by a local newspaper called NY Journal American.  They are oversized photographs that measure 11 3/4" x 17", and it features many of the great stars that would man the Brooklyn field for the next decade.

It includes such notables as Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe, Ralph Branca, Duke Snider, Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese and Carl Erskine.  Quizzically, the 5' 9" Campanella (located on the top row-two from the left) is partially obstructed by a 6' 5" pitcher named Paul Minner.  Why they put Minner in front of Campy instead of the other way around is a mystery.

Anyway, as I said above I bought this for peanuts on eBay.  It was part of a lot of two different NY Journal American team photos (the Dodgers and Yankees) that I took home for under $22 delivered.  These typically, in the VG shape that they were in, can be found for about $25 to $30 each, so to get both for less than that is a win in my book.

Check out the Yankees photo below.  It includes Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, Johnny Mize, Hank Bauer, Phil Rizzuto and Casey Stengel.  Unfortunately, it would be another two years before Mickey Mantle joined the club.  Click on any pic to embiggen.
