Blog Kiosk: 12/15/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Yesterday the Dodgers held their annual Children's Holiday Party at Dodger Stadium, and both Joc Pederson and Austin Barnes were on-hand to take in the festivities... And to play dodgeball. Per Rowan Kanver at Dodger Insider:
A day full of games and gifts also included pictures with Santa Clause, dodgeball and sledding.
“It kind of brings you back to your childhood for sure, playing dodgeball, sled races, playing in the snow,” Barnes said. “It’s a good time.”
Please tell me that the ball headed for Joc was a direct hit.

  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1968 Dodgers GM Al Campanis traded his own son, Jim Campanis, to the KC Royals.  In 1987 the Dodgers signed free agent outfielder Mike Davis to a contract.  He would eventually become a hero for taking a walk and stealing a base ahead of Kirk Gibson's walk-off Game 1 World Series homer.  In 2004 the Dodgers signed free agent second baseman Jeff Kent to a three year $21 million contract.  In 2009 the Dodgers trade Juan Pierre to the White Sox for two players to be named later - John Ely and Jon Link

  • Both Justin Turner and Chase Utley are in Dubai as a part of a goodwill trip that will include a kid's clinic. Per Arabian Aerospace; "Emirates takes Los Angeles Dodgers players to Dubai."

Emirates’ local grassroots initiatives with the Los Angeles Dodgers highlight the airline’s commitment to the development of baseball in Dubai and the UAE.  Emirates and the Los Angeles Dodgers currently support the Dubai Little League with financial support, equipment, and uniforms to develop the talent of the 700 players in different divisions.
McDaniel was recognized as the Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Year, while director of team travel Scott Akasaki received the Donald Davidson Memorial Award
  • Here is one of the few rumors I will share here. Per a tweet from Tim Brown, we are apparently looking at a reliever in Japan:

  • Eric Stephen at True Blue LA put together a nice report on Yoshihisa Hirano here.
  • Tracy Hackler at Panini's blog The Knight's Lance shares a bunch of preview pics of their upcoming 2017 Flawless Baseball set; including a look at a Cody Bellinger cards seen on the right. Go here to check out more pics. These cards will hit stores next week.
  • Per Eric Stephen at True Blue LA; "Trevor Oaks looks to make his mark for the Dodgers in 2018."
“If you can get outs in four pitches or less, that’s a lost art. That’s what I try to set out to do every time. With all the analytics and everything, the emphasis on strikeouts has gone up a ton,” Oaks said. “Everybody likes watching those “wow” pitches that blow hitters away, and that’s obviously what our objective is and we’re trying to do that. But if I so happen to get a hard ground ball out to my shortstop in two pitches, I’m not going to be disappointed.”
  • Please tell me a video of the performance will be made available. I'd love to check it out. Per The News Journal in Kentucky; "Kentucky Chautauqa actor bringing baseball great Pee Wee Reese to life in Corbin."
“When I was growing up, Pee Wee was an active baseball player. He was a young shortstop from Kentucky and I was a kid from Paducah who was a baseball fan.”
Usher said as he did research into Reese’s life prior to auditioning for the Kentucky Humanities Council in 2007, he became more and more impressed with Reese for his willingness to work with Robinson.
“Pee Wee was a person who had a knack for putting himself in other people’s shoes,” Usher said. “He saw things from other people’s point of view.”
