Blog Kiosk: 11/9/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

If I were Leo I wouldn't want that guy angry at me.

Featured above is a promotional photo showing legendary Dodger manager Leo Durocher with Herman Munster (Fred Gwynne), dated April 4, 1965. (eBay link) As you may know, they filmed an episode of The Munsters where Herman came out for a Baseball tryout. Watch a snippet of the episode here.

Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1998 the Dodgers signed free agent outfielder Devon White. He would play two season in Los Angeles before being traded to the Brewers for Marquis Grissom in 2001. As a Dodger he slashed .267/.330/.402/.732. In 2001 the Dodgers received left-handed starting pitcher Omar Daal from the Phillies for Eric Junge and Jesus Cordero. Thirty-year old Daal would go on to have a decent year for the Dodgers. He went 11-9 with an 3.90 ERA in 161.1 innings, 105 strikeouts, 54 walks and a 1.3 WAR.

  • Dodgers Memorabilia: Check out this 1957 program for an annual charitable dinner sponsored by The Men's Club of Union Temple in Brooklyn that's on auction at Lelands (link here). It includes autographs of Roy Campanella, Duke Snider and several other Dodgers. There's also an autograph from someone named "Grandpa Sam". Anyone know who that is? It couldn't be this guy, is it?

  • Jay Jaffe at FanGraphs takes a look at Orel Hershiser's qualifications on the HOF Today's Game ballot, here.
  • Just another departure. Per Matt Borelli at Dodger Blue; "Game-Planning/Communications Coach Danny Lehmann Won’t Return For 2019 Season."
  • Beyond the Boxscore names Matt Kemp their comeback player of the year winner. This is an easy choice. Kemp will no doubt win the award that's sanctioned by MLB too.
Then Kemp, along with Max Muncy, wound up carrying the Dodgers’ for the first half of the season. Until the All-Star break, Kemp slashed .310/.352/.522 for a 137 wRC+. Among Dodgers not named Max Muncy, Kemp led the Dodgers in OPS, wRC+, and wOBA. His performance was enough to earn him a starting spot on the NL All-Star team.
In the broader picture, of course, there’s surely something to be gleaned from this document. The notion of a payroll that trudges northward with inflation certainly does not align with the general image of the Dodgers as a freewheeling financial behemoth. It generally suggests that the organization will prioritize efficient spending while generally avoiding massive and lengthy contractual entanglements — a description that won’t be surprising to those that have followed the club’s course under president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman.
  • Per Dustin Nosler at Dodgers Digest; "Dodgers have many interesting Rule 5 Draft protection decisions to make."
  • This weeks Topps Throwback Thursday set features six Baseball legends on the '75-'76 Basketball card design, and it includes Sandy Koufax. Unfortunately, a preview pic of his card is not provided. Go here to check it out and order.
