Blog Kiosk: 7/31/2019 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Tony Gonsolin was fire last night. He recorded his first career save by pitching four innings to close out the game -- allowing just three hits, one earned run and recording three strike outs. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
“It was all about his fastball command tonight,” said Roberts. “Saved the ‘pen and, just more importantly for Tony, just the confidence. For any pitcher, in this ballpark, it’s a leap of faith, and we showed the confidence and he didn’t let the conditions affect him.”
...
“Pounding fastball down, mixing changeup, using the slider,” said Martin. “Even the first game in Arizona, I thought he threw the ball well, got unlucky with some defense, we didn’t pick him up. Tonight, Coors Field, sometimes guys’ stuff doesn’t act the same. He was lights-out today. If you can do it here, you can do it anywhere.
No good deed goes unpunished. The musical chairs continue for the Dodgers. They have just called up righty reliever Dylan Floro, who's coming off the 10-day IL, and sent righty Tony Gonsolin to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

On creating a unique voice for the Dodgers’ social presence:
Jo: “I tried to do a little bit differently than how it was done in the past. Obviously we’re the Dodgers, so we’re not going to go full savage mode here…But I thought that didn’t mean that we had to be boring. I wanted to create some sort of voice that was fun. Maybe sometimes there was a little bit of sass involved. But like kind of just like honing what I wanted that voice to be. I carried that straight through the end of the postseason last year and then this year when I did hire the MLB person to help us I had him watch what I was doing and just kind of observe and just kind of see how I was responding to certain fans and how I was doing that.”
  • Puig is no friend of the Pirates! Via Matt Lyons at Let's Go Tribe -- "Yasiel Puig involved in brawl for a team he doesn’t play for anymore: Puig’s final act as a Red, or first as an Indian, is brawling to defend his teammates. This is going to be fun." I do kinda miss him, but at the same time I don't miss this kind of stuff. *You can watch a play-by-play of the fight by Jomboy Media, here. As always, this is fantastic.

The Dodgers are so superior to every other NL team — “a grid better than everyone else,” in the words of one rival executive — that it influences not only their behavior, but many of the contenders in the league.
...
“We are a good club, but the Dodgers are a great club,” said an official from an NL contender. “We have to figure out how to get better to compete with them. And that means not giving away too many future assets because they are not going away.”

  • Via a PCL report at MiLB.com -- "Brown, (Dustin) May Named PCL Players Of The Week."
Oklahoma City pitcher Dustin May picked up two wins on the week, surrendering just one earned run in 12.0 innings pitched while racking up a total of 10 strikeouts. May allowed the fewest runs scored (1) amongst pitchers with eight or more innings pitched, and was also among the league leaders in ERA (0.75, 4th), WHIP (0.75, 4th) strikeouts (10, T-4th) and average against (.154, 5th). In his first start of the week on July 23 against Nashville, May scattered three hits over six scoreless frames while striking out four in the win over the Sounds.
Do you think the Dodgers need to make a move, or do you think they’ll be fine with their current roster?
“They don’t have to do anything. When you’re in that position you have the leverage and power. I don’t think they overpay for anything. The versatility of the roster and the fact that there is such a large gap in the division. They’re going to have two months where they need to address things, if they don’t go outside the organization. The one thing the organization has shown is that there are a bunch of different roads they can go down. What you’re seeing now, the names may be the same, but they may be in different roles. Maybe guys that we haven’t seen at the big league level that will have a huge impact.”
