Blog Kiosk: 11/5/2019 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Just another vintage Spring Training AP press photo to get you excited about the upcoming season. (eBay auction link) Per the descriptor on the reverse:
Vero Beach, Fla., Feb 27, 1963 -- Alston Likes What He Sees -- Los Angeles Dodgers Manager Walter Alston (left) is all smiles as pitcher Sandy Koufax gives assurances at spring training camp his left hand is in good shape. The Dodgers sagged in last year's pennant race when Koufax came up with an ailing finger.
Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1936 the Dodgers named former Brooklyn spitballer Burleigh Grimes as their manager. In 1940 former Dodger lawyer Wendell Willkie loses to third term American President Franklin D. Roosevelt in today's Presidential election. He would later on become VP and legal counsel for Brooklyn in the early 40's and would then be replaced by Walter O'MalleyIn 2008 Dodgers pitcher Greg Maddux wins his 18th career Gold Glove.

  • As you likely know by now, Cody Bellinger is a finalist for the Most Valuable Player Award and Hyun-Jin Ryu is a finalist for the Cy Young Award.
  • Former Dodgers Tommy John and Steve Garvey are on the Hall of Fame ballot covering the Modern Baseball Era, via Matt Kelly at MLB.com. Other notable names are Dave Parker and Marvin Miller. Per Cary Osborne at Dodger Insider:
“It’s been a journey toward the Hall of Fame being on the ballot every other year now,” Garvey said that day. “I thought last time would be the time (for me to get inducted), but for whatever reason with the last selection (by a Hall of Fame era committee), more people are saying let’s really do what we should do with Steve Garvey’s career and take time to look at the body of work. And I think more people are doing that. And God willing, I’ll be on the ballot in December, and they’ll vote and maybe, just maybe.”
  • The Cardboard Connection shares a bunch of preview pics from Topps 2020 Bowman Baseball card brand; including the autographed Max Muncy card on the right. Go here to check out more. These cards are slated to hit store shelves in mid-April.
  • I'm just keeping an eye on the competition. Per Alex Didion at NBC Sports -- "Giants' Mike Krukow identifies Farhan Zaidi's 'prototype' manager."
“I think one of the big examples of a manager that is a prototype in the eyes of Farhan is Dave Roberts,” Krukow said on “The TK Show” with The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami. “We all knew Dave Roberts when he was with the Giants and one of the more gregarious souls on this planet, just a really solid, good guy.”
...
“I think that’s one of the things Farhan believes in, is the culture of the clubhouse," Krukow continued. "And I think the job Dave Roberts has done down in Los Angeles is phenomenal.
